OMG I have been thinking of the same thing. My mom's gharrara is a beautiful red color, also in kamkhawab. I wanted to see if I could incorporate it in my shadi, either on the mehndi with a different shirt and dopatta or on a dholki. I know the general layout of the shirt, I would want it short- maybe mid-thigh.
Don't know what fabric shirt I want yet, but something more structured than chiffon, hmm..
I'm really short as well (5 ft 2) so I'm scared of looking weird in a gharrarra :/
I think kiran would look fine, especially if you're not planning to wear the dopatta on your head. Post a better picture though if you want more ideas!
i think the brick red/brown colour should be your shirt. it'll bring out the beauty in the material, if its like what you've posted. the gold will make it sleepy, if you know what i mean? i'm not a fan of kiran or gota per se so i'll say no to those :/
A lot of brides are wearing kamkhwaab ghararas of their moms these days, I usually see them do a chiffon long shirt, a few inches below knees, with embroidery and matching dupatta. Usually I have seen red with a bottle green kamkhwaab as well as brown. And pink and ferozi combo shirt dupatta with pink and gold kamkhwaab.
Go for the shirt in red brown with a thinker gota on the shirt and a thinner version on the dupatta if you want it on the lighter side, otherwise the same gota or even kiran would look lovely. If you are recreating the retro look go for it fully. It won't look OTT, you are after all the bride.
That's the one ^ But my mom's is a two painchay ka
Just looking at it gives me butterflies...its so damn vintage and beautiful
these Gharaaraas are two paiNche waalaa! :) my sisters wore this type of Gharaaraas on their weddings. :) this type of Gharaarah is quite common in India.
beautiful!! I am loving the turquoise/blue accent in there. Please do piping in the same colour on the reverse side of the shirt and dupatta!
Oooooooh SGC! I lovvveyyyyyyy that idea mucho!
I also found a restoration company in Chicago that does vintage fabric restoration and dry cleaning...has anyone ever used an American company for restoring/cleaning fabric like kamkhab?
this materioal i think is called KamKhowaab...right?
I was originally thinking dark beige/dull gold kameez
Now I think I want a really dark colored shirt. The original outfit had a brick/brown plain shirt and the same colored dupatta with kiran border. I cannot find kiran around me that isn't cheesy looking so should I do a thin gota border or the piping as SGC was saying?

Yes, it is. I just adore it.
Ooh, show it to them. I'd be interested in knowing if they do handle vintage Indian fabrics.
