Old School Gharara

I have my mom’s Valima Gharara from the 70’s

Its a beautiful brick brown-red color and its kamkhab material

I want to recreate that look…but not sure yet about exactly how

So the gharara is not the slim fit kind…its got a lot of ghair
What kind of a shirt?

This is it!

I was thinking of going with a champagne color scheme…do you think a dull gold chiffon jamwar ki shirt would be nice with this?

Should I use gota or not?

Should I use kiran on the dupatta?

Also, has anyone gotten these gharara’s restored or freshened up?

How does that work?

Re: Old School Gharara

OMG I have been thinking of the same thing. My mom's gharrara is a beautiful red color, also in kamkhawab. I wanted to see if I could incorporate it in my shadi, either on the mehndi with a different shirt and dopatta or on a dholki. I know the general layout of the shirt, I would want it short- maybe mid-thigh.

Don't know what fabric shirt I want yet, but something more structured than chiffon, hmm..

I'm really short as well (5 ft 2) so I'm scared of looking weird in a gharrarra :/

Re: Old School Gharara

I am about 5'3.5

Structured shirt...yes you're probably right about that. If I remember correctly, my mom didn't have chiffon.

Would kiran look too OTT?

Re: Old School Gharara

I think kiran would look fine, especially if you're not planning to wear the dopatta on your head. Post a better picture though if you want more ideas!

Re: Old School Gharara

I think gota would be more ott, no? Cuz it's thicker.

Re: Old School Gharara

i think the brick red/brown colour should be your shirt. it'll bring out the beauty in the material, if its like what you've posted. the gold will make it sleepy, if you know what i mean? i'm not a fan of kiran or gota per se so i'll say no to those :/

Re: Old School Gharara

A lot of brides are wearing kamkhwaab ghararas of their moms these days, I usually see them do a chiffon long shirt, a few inches below knees, with embroidery and matching dupatta. Usually I have seen red with a bottle green kamkhwaab as well as brown. And pink and ferozi combo shirt dupatta with pink and gold kamkhwaab.

Re: Old School Gharara

Go for the shirt in red brown with a thinker gota on the shirt and a thinner version on the dupatta if you want it on the lighter side, otherwise the same gota or even kiran would look lovely. If you are recreating the retro look go for it fully. It won't look OTT, you are after all the bride.

Re: Old School Gharara

Reha, did you mean this Ghararah worn by Leena Chandravarkar in the movie “MeHboob kii Mehndii”?

Re: Old School Gharara

That's the one ^ But my mom's is a two painchay ka

Just looking at it gives me butterflies...its so damn vintage and beautiful

Old School Gharara

I wanted to do the same thing when I got married but I hadn't discovered GS designers yet to help me at the time. Didn't go to Pakistan either.

Re: Old School Gharara

This is the gharara itself…finally

Re: Old School Gharara

beautiful!! I am loving the turquoise/blue accent in there. Please do piping in the same colour on the reverse side of the shirt and dupatta!

Re: Old School Gharara

these Gharaaraas are two paiNche waalaa! :) my sisters wore this type of Gharaaraas on their weddings. :) this type of Gharaarah is quite common in India.

Re: Old School Gharara

this materioal i think is called KamKhowaab…right?

Re: Old School Gharara

Oooooooh SGC! I lovvveyyyyyyy that idea mucho!

I also found a restoration company in Chicago that does vintage fabric restoration and dry cleaning...has anyone ever used an American company for restoring/cleaning fabric like kamkhab?

Yes, it is. I just adore it.

Re: Old School Gharara

thanx…vaise, is kapRe kaa naam “kam-Khowaab” [kam kam neend laane waalaa] kiuN rakkhaa gayaa kiuN k aise kapRe pahen ke kaun so saktaa hai? :cb:

Re: Old School Gharara

Why no a plain kameez to tone it down a bit?
If you think its to OTT.

Re: Old School Gharara

^ Yeah Munz

I was originally thinking dark beige/dull gold kameez

Now I think I want a really dark colored shirt. The original outfit had a brick/brown plain shirt and the same colored dupatta with kiran border. I cannot find kiran around me that isn't cheesy looking so should I do a thin gota border or the piping as SGC was saying?

Re: Old School Gharara

Ooh, show it to them. I'd be interested in knowing if they do handle vintage Indian fabrics.
