Is this from a UK based company? because you can claim money from them within 6 years window. Here's what you can do:
If the check isnt dated then usually you have to cash them within 6 months. But you can still take it to the bank and ask them if they would accept. Coz a lot of times they do accept it if the funds are still there in their bank.
In case the bank refused to accept, then try writing to the company and explain to them that you found the cheque a bit too late and if they could reissue a new one. Normally they do it, if its within the 6 year window.
So yeah, these are the factors involved since its almost 5 years old now !
I would send a scanned or xeroxed copy of the check with the letter to the company. Clearly a call would be in order. If scanning it then simpky send them an email. Else snaill mail should work.
your husband should return the cheque with a note explaining why he did not cash it and request for another replacement cheque. the cheque you hold is still-dated and not cash-able.
make sure to make a photocopy of that cheque for your safekeeping.
nadz, can you husband write to the company or call the finance department and request them to transfer the money to his account via another method since cheque isnt really suitable given your situation ?
