An 85-year old Arab expatriate, who was declared dead by physicians at the Hospital, recently returned from the world beyond and is now happily reunited with his wife and family.
Abu Awni recently suffered a stroke while at home. His family — his wife, Umm Awni, and sons — gave him medication that was prescribed to him previously for his medical problem. Despite the medicines, Abu Awni’s condition steadily deteriorated and the family called for an ambulance to rush him to the HMC.
On arrival at the HMC, physicians tried to revive Abu Awni but somehow reached the conclusion that the man was already beyond any human help. They declared him as dead and his body was eventually sent to the mortuary while his family arranged for the last rites.
Once in the mortuary, Abu Awni seems to have regained his consciousness and found himself in strange confines, wrapped in a shroud. He started yelling to draw attention, since he was incapable of moving himself away. Luckily, a mortuary employee on duty heard Abu Awni’s screams and rushed to find help. Physicians too rushed and found the octogenarian alive. They immediately transferred him to the Intensive Care Unit, the daily reports.
Umm Awni, meanwhile, grieving the death of her husband, was reading the Holy Quran, seeking eternal peace for the departed soul. It was early morning when she received a phone call from the HMC, informing her that her husband was alive, though critical, and receiving medical attention at the ICU. Unable to contain her joy, she rushed to the HMC.
“I kissed my husband’s hand and indeed, he was really alive. He responded to my touch and also put his hand on my head and smiled,” Umm Awni, said. She stayed beside him till he had recovered and the couple returned home. The report, however, did not mention the conditions that led to Abu Awni being declared dead by physicians.
