ok computer guru's

I bought the following hard drive …

MAXTOR 200GB 16MB CACHE DIAMOND MAX PLUS 9 7200RPM ATA 133 (OEM)
[Maxtor-200GB-ATA-6B200R0]

Buy the MAXTOR 200GB 16MB CACHE DIAMOND MAX 10 ata hard-drive Key Features:

• SATA II Interface
• Native Command Queuing
• Burst Data Transfer Speeds up to 150 MB/sec
• Up to 300GB capacities
• 9.3 ms average seek time
• 8MB & 16MB Cache Buffer
• 100% FDB Motors
• 7200 RPM

The problem i am running into recently is that… i downloaded about 89 gigs of data but XP shows that i am using up 196 gig of data! :frowning: I do this by right clicking on the Hard drive from My computer which is in this case is E: Drive

But

I know i didnt download 200 gigs of data as yet! so i went inside the hard drive and i have about 5 folders. So i right click on them and check the properties of that …then it tells me that i am only using 89 gigs of data! which is correct to my sense cuz i know i didnt download anything more. I tried reading hidden files, but couldnt see any… My question is..where did my other 100 gigs of space? I downloaded large disk enabler from maxtor and MS but that was for initial installation of HD when i purchased it.
Cuz i believe Windows Xp sp2 only recognizes 137 gigs. anyhow..my problem is that..i am only using 89 gigs of data when i right click on all my folders and read the size…

I want to find out whats using the other 100 gigs of data? What could it be?

Re: ok computer guru's

i had a sort of similar problem with my maxtor 40 gig hd. xp was only showing 18 gigs for some reason. i'm pretty sure there is a better solution out there but i formated my hd using maxtor utility and then got an updated fdisk program from ms website, added it to my startup floppy and ran setup again. voila

Re: ok computer guru's

try to make partition ...

Re: ok computer guru's

^ why? how will that help me gain back my 100 gigs? i can see the 200gigs and its available to me...so there is no partitions or any of that

Re: ok computer guru's

Re: ok computer guru’s

sh*T ..i just figured it out!
It was my norton anti virus recycling bin! that was taking up 117 gigs of space! lolllll it took me good 5 minutes to purge it! So if any of u ever are missing some space and dont know what it is…do check ur recycling bin

Re: ok computer guru’s

That would be the first thing I would check :stuck_out_tongue:

Initially I thought you didnt format the drive properly, so only one part of the drive was formatted, so was gonna suggest you to use a programme like Maxblast or something to format it.. :k:

Re: ok computer guru’s

Re: ok computer guru's

the important question here is.. how much did u end up paying for a 300GB 16MB Cache drive..

Re: ok computer guru’s

he said he bought a 200 gb not 300 gb.

300 gb ATA drives are getting really really cheap since new SATA drives are now occupying the market. I recently bought 3 Ultra ATA 300 GB Maxtor drives for under $150 each. With my existing 2 hard drives, I now have one TB + storage space. I did have to buy a new powersuply with more IDE power connectors and a PCI controller card to add that many drives to my home-built computer though. It is fun to download so much, backup so much and store all the software on these hard drives without having to worry about running out of space. Scanning for virus, Defragmenting and running chkdsk can be a pain because it takes hours to do it. I have nightly schedules to run these tasks so I don’t have to watch the hourglass for hours..
