I have been using very little oil for cooking.
So little that while frying onions they start to
burn at times. Canola/olive oil has same number
of calories per tbs. Is there another oil with fewer calories
for desi cooking? Or any other alternative? Thankyou.
Re: Oil substitutes???
Crisco?
**Dalda **try karo
Re: Oil substitutes???
always use olive oil- it's the best one!
Re: Oil substitutes???
i’ve read that once olive oil is heated, it loses all its good properties and nutrition, for lack of a better word. its only beneficial if its eaten as-is, for eg. with bread dipped in it.
have you tried those cooking sprays, like Pam?
this is a great article that should answer your question ![]()
Re: Oil substitutes???
I think canola is a good one for cooking.
Can anyone tell if it is ok to cook using a medium sort of amount of oil and then drain the oil out at the end? Is it the same as cooking in less oil?
Re: Oil substitutes???
i think that canola is good for cooking....
FEMME...i sometimes drain the oil that way, after cooking...especially if i make some curry in which it come on floating on the top of the dish...i just remove it ...
i think that should help as the consumption of oil per serving is reduced then...me thinks...:)
Re: Oil substitutes???
heheh…i was googling sth a few weeks back and read this article then…
Re: Oil substitutes???
Last time I used a cooking spray to fry onions it didn't work that well.
Infact the spray starts to evaporate quickly leaving the onions burning.
Is there a particular brand someone here knows of that might work?????
It's so hard to make healthy desi food without having it taste so bland.

It's a good idea to drain any remaining oil from the food but do however keep in mind that a lot of that oil has been saturated into the meat/veggies during the cooking process. Therefore, it's always best to use a little bit of oil to begin with.
Re: Oil substitutes???
Actually I will read the package and will let you know but I use very little of it so never thought that it will have much impact...
Re: Oil substitutes???
Olive oil burns every quickly so its not good for frying onions. They oil will leave a burnt smell or will smoke
I switch between Canola and Sunflower oil.
Who cares bout calories, its Oil you know, if you dont wanto fry onions then grind them into a paste and use that instead
