Porsche has marked an important milestone at its Leipzig plant: The manufacturing facility has officially cranked out its 500,000th vehicle. [Matthias Muller](http://www.autoblog.com/tag/matthias muller), Porsche president and CEO, gave a specially outfitted Cayenne to the city of Leipzig as a token of the company’s appreciation for giving the manufacturer a home in the area. Porsche converted the luxury SUV into a fire department vehicle for the city, complete with an appropriate livery and light bar.

Porsche began manufacturing the Cayenne in Leipzig in 2002, but has steadily increased production capacity over the past ten years. Right now, the facility is producing more vehicles than it ever has, and the German manufacturer is already working to accommodate the new [Macan](http://www.autoblog.com/tag/porsche macan) line. The smaller SUV will begin rolling out of the factory doors by the end of 2013.

The automaker says it is investing more than $629.4 million in the Leipzig plant in order to ready the facility for the new model. That includes the addition of an all-new body-assembly line and paint shop as well as hiring 1,000 new employees.
