Finally, what might be some good news for the beleaguered Peugeot. The Gallic brand has let loose details on the 208 GTi, a hot hatch that hopes to do a better job of channeling the much beloved 205 GTi than the intervening 206 and 207 models. Our drive of the standard 208 revealed a hatch that stoked some of those old fires, and on paper the 208 GTi has two of our favorite things going for it: less weight and more power.
It has dropped 165 kilograms (363 pounds) compared to the 207 GTi, and its 1.6-liter turbo is rated at 197-horsepower and 203 pound-feet - a 22-hp jump over the 207 GTi, and power numbers in line with the GTi’s competition like the Renault Clio RS but a fair corral short of the 280 hp in the Vauxhall Astra VXR. Utilized via a close-ratio six-speed manual and with more stiffness, firmer steering, revised suspension, damping, spring rates and anti-roll bar, Peugeot says the new package is good for a sub-seven-second run from 0 to 62 mph. What’s more, hooning should still be prominent on the menu since the ESP can be turned completely off.
At launch, Peugeot will offer a special run of 50 GTis in Satin Pearlescent White on 17-inch Onyx Black alloys, with further identifying trim such as the colors of the French flag on the grille, standard sat-nav and a numbered plaque. All GTis will get items like chrome exterior trim, a chequered flag motif on the grille, gloss black rear skirt and trapezoidal exhaust tips beneath the rear hatch-mounted spoiler. Inside will be found Club Nappa leather offset with Caro Weave cloth and contrasting red stitching, an aluminum shift knob, flat-bottomed steering wheel and red LED lighting for the dash cluster and white needles.
The 208 GTi will go on sale in the Spring of next year, but we’ll get a close look at it later this month at the Paris Motor Show. It will be joined by the production version of the 208 XY, the glammed-up version of the 208 aimed at the urban chic man and woman about Europe. Have a look just below for the press release with more details.Continue reading Peugeot reveals 2013 208 GTi and 208 XY ahead of Paris debut
