Well, yes and no - Bluebird should be a familiar name to anyone with even a passing interest in land speed record history. A series of record-breaking LSR cars and boats ran the under the Bluebird moniker in the 1920s and 1930s with Britain’s Sir Malcolm Campbell at the wheel, a legacy later carried on by his son, Donald Campbell and his grandson, Don Wales. It’s that same lineage that’s being leveraged with a new sports car and race car effort announced out of England.
According to a press release issued today, a run of 50 Bluebird DC50 electric sports cars (rendering above) are planned to commemorate a half-century since Donald Campbell set various land and water records. The company says that all fifty examples will feature Bluebird blue paint on its electric power scissor doors, and a 360-horsepower electric drivetrain offering up to 200 miles of range. Pricing and availability have not yet been released, nor performance metrics, though “acceleration to match a Porsche” is promised.
The other car shown in the image above is the Bluebird GTL electric race car, and it has been conceived with the FIA’s Formula E series that’s set to start next year. The GTL represents “Bluebird’s ‘vision’ for the all-electric global race series,” but no further technical details have been provided, nor any plans for production divulged.
Both the DC50 road car and GTL race car will bow at England’s Sustainable MotoExpo on September 28, at the National Motor Museum in the village of Beaulieu.
