if this KGB archiver is really all that, then from the purist's perspective this compression algorithm is ever so close to Shannon's limit than any other algorithm... but just reading from the above posts about some problems, I suspect that the signal to noise ratio is still problematic, and that's why there may be digital signature mismatches.
If it really does work, then imagine the possibilities for transferring files through restricted bandwidths of mobile techs etc.

i tried it for a 2 MB file and i cud not see the percentage moving any higher than 0....
i tried it for a 21 kb file and it compressed it to 1.6 kb....
i tried a 48 kb file and still i cud notice any profess in compression after 2 minutes....
if it works at that speed, i think the author can keep his technology to himself, no one is going to wait that long for compressing/decompressing files....

Without arguing whether the technology is or is not functional, you need to have some background in compression and encryption algorithm to appreciate the value of such a solution if it were to be invented. Like I said, the purists have always contended (since the mid 50s I think) that no compression can exceed Shannon’s limit while providing flawless compression without loss of information.
Also, we need to treat the compression technologies in isolation from internet connectivity and hardware capabilities… right now the compression takes up time, but given this advancement, when the hardware becomes more capable (which it certainly will), this will virtually take no time at all.

Listen to umar. It wont become useless. Compression is used in more things than you thought. Practically ever electrical device uses compression.

hows this, the music you listen to is compressed, video, tv, dvd, mp3, ogg, flac, wma, aac, gzip which is used on practically all handheld devices so that you need less space for expensive ROM when it (OS) can be uncompresed to volatile memory. Many webservers use gzip in transfer of HTTP headers etc.... the list can go on for ages. Compression saves you loads of money.
ITS NOT JUST ABOUT TRANSFER OF DATA ON INTERNET

Infact withought compression we wont be having the consumer 'digital revolution' now of mobile phones, mp3 players, digital photograpy. Becuase to take a few photos you would need to take a 3.5" hard disk with yourself. You wont be able to have more than 10 albums on a 60gb ipod.

wait a miniute to all you who don't think it has any use in this time of the century. I have 2 terrabites of hard drive space occupied with my software and DVD quality home movies. I would love to compress them all and have them all fit in within a gig.

I think compression is fine. But the time it takes to compress and decompress should be improved. Considerably.

no one is saying that compression of data is a nono, what we are saying is that the amount of time it takes is ridiculous!. Sure, in the future it might be 'better', but then again in the future size of the files are not going to be in GBs...
