Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia (outside Washington DC) **

University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois

University of Kansas at Lawrence, Kansas

University of Mississippi at Oxford, Mississippi

University of Nevada at Las Vegas

Portland State University, Portland, Oregon

University of Rhode Island, Kingston, Rhode Island **

Rutgers University at New Brunswick, New Jersey **

University of Texas at Austin, Texas

** = I would be inclined by geography to pick one of these.

Those are the schools the uni I’m scheduled to start my MA at in Oct has a semester exchange program with. I requested the info pack today, as this would be a great opportunity to get some real stuff on the CV. Plus a chance to see some of the US.

Which of those schools are worth while?

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

RUTGERS ofcourse... because I went there and loved it! :)

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

It is entirely campus based?

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

lbg- what are you interested in? aside from geography.
I went to Kansas, and have been to a number of but not all these unis. are you interested in going to a good uni? or are you interested in going to a place where you can go travel around, youy want to have a campus centric experience or you want to experience a real city...etc etc

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois -- one of the best public schools in US.

However, check the ranking/rating of your program of study at those universities. You may find a better choice.

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

How much you can afford, $ wise...In US-education "What you Pay is what u get" holds very true!

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

Not true, there are excellent public universities that are cheaper than, and ranked significantly above expensive private colleges.

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

The only options I would have are these colleges. I think in terms of fees we have an exchange agreement wherein you just pay the cost of living, the fees having been paid to the uni here.

I would like to be within reasonable travel time of NY and DC, and thus those with ** next to there name appear to be the better options. It would be 1 term, probably 2nd in the academic year, so Jan to March.

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

Campus based is not really a big issue. I would just seek a crazy 3 months, with sight seeing on the East Coast a priority.

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

if sight seeing eastcoast is a priority then i would suggest you go to rutgers, good uni, good location. NJ kinda sucks but then you are close to NYC, Philly, etc, you can hop on amtrak and be in boston in a few hours same for dc .

but if u have a choice I would say go for fall term rather than spring term.

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

Since he is seeking for Crazy three months than SPring may be better than Fall as it offers a week for Spring break which either can be spent on sight seeing in NYC or DC area or down south downing stuff like real spring breaker:D

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

You're a wise old man :D

What is the best school of those listed, ignoring all other factors?

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

old, yes, wise..doubtful.

depends on the program

I would rate them in this order just from what I think overall..top of myhead. u can compare this against a uni ranking and correct if you wish

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois
University of Texas at Austin, Texas
University of Kansas at Lawrence, Kansas
Rutgers University at New Brunswick, New Jersey **
University of Rhode Island, Kingston, Rhode Island **
George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia (outside Washington DC) **
University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia
University of Mississippi at Oxford, Mississippi
University of Nevada at Las Vegas
Portland State University, Portland, Oregon

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

Yaar is university of Kansas good?

The only time I looked at Kansas was whilst studying the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1860 (I think, its been 3 years).

No Love for me????

Man i am trying to help u have good time!! :dISAPPOINTED:

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

With due respect, none of those ranked public universities are listed by LBG. Top public schools are University systems of California and Michigan, possibly Texas.

Coming back to the list, I do agree that UIUC is at the top of the list however the differences between certain universities are marginal at best.

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

I checked the rankings, and I was mistaken i thought rhode island would be in the top 100 and georgia will not be, its the opposite, other than that the top unis were right, although not in the same order. my frame of reference was business schools and not overall unis. but its close nuff to give you an idea.

illinois - 44
texas-47
Georgia- 60
Rutgers-60
kansas - 88

nevada not in top 100
mississipi not in top 100
portland not in top 100
george mason not in top 100
rhode island not in top 100

Re: Of these US schools, which are the best? (study abroad options)

LBG has not listed top ranked private unis either. so its a moot point whether the top ranked public unis are in his list or not.

my point was more general that its not always the case that more expensive uni means better education.

illinois or texas are significantly better than unis liek clark uni or drexel or roger williams, but cheaper.

Are those US News rankings?
