Re: Of Sheep & Shepherds

We all have played the part of being a Shepherd, sheep and a big bad wolf.. scenarios were different, intentions were discrepant.. sinners fell into different ranks, saints were eliminated but we all have played the good, bad and ugly.

Your emotions and sentiments are in the right place. bravo.

Just to add a bit.

Food supply chain works in three steps (perhaps like any other supply chain).

  1. Farm (food is produced)
  2. Distribution system (from farmer to whole-seller, to retailer)
  3. Food consumer.

The problem in many many countries is that there is enough food on the farm, or in the warehouses.

The issue is with a messed up distribution system thanks largely due to tribal warfare, and commie policies of their governments.

Global food supply system is now so mature, that a peaceful area can be resupplied in the matter of hours or at the most days.

However if the target area is hostile to the international food network, then you can't do a thing.

p.s. Giving away leftovers is a noble idea, but it is impractical due to logistics. If you have a leftover piece of meat in your plate, it cannot be consumed by a hungry kid in Somalia. it will rot before the end user could consume it. The idea is to cook enough that it is consumed and you don't end up dumping large quantities of leftover.

Big eateries cannot give away leftovers from a plate, because of strict code of health and sanitation. However most of the large chains do have a system to provide leftover food that is still in boxes (and not from the plate) to local volunteer orgs.
