Of Hyundai as a 'Best Value' and other car discussions

Interesting. Esp for those who are planning to buy a vehicle.

**Buyers rate Hyundai as high-quality**

Comeback automaker Hyundai has scored big in yet another survey, this one measuring which vehicle brand provides the best value according to owners.

Hyundai, a budget brand from South Korea, came in second only to Toyota’s ™ luxury brand, Lexus, in the survey, released Monday.

Strategic Vision, an automotive consulting firm, asked 74,000 owners to rate the overall value of their new cars and trucks based on price paid, affordability, expected reliability and resale value.

Lexus owners view their vehicles as a good value when comparing features, technology and pricing to other luxury brands, such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, says Daniel Gorrell, vice president of automotive practice for Strategic Vision.

Hyundai scored well because the brand’s vehicle quality has improved, its models have a long warranty and they are affordable.

In the late '90s, Hyundai’s image suffered as engines and electrical systems failed and rust showed up. Dealers began abandoning franchises. “Not very long ago, they were the butt of jokes,” Gorrell says.

Hyundai began to turn around when it started to focus on quality as it redesigned products and backed the new vehicles with an aggressive, 10-year warranty, says Robert Cosmai, head of Hyundai Motor America.

Over the past year, Hyundai has scored well in several automotive studies, including the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, which measures problems owners reported in the first 90 days. It also won recommended buy ratings from Consumer Reports magazine this year for the Santa Fe sport-utility vehicle, Sonata compact sedan and XG350 midsize sedan.

Except for luxury brands Cadillac and Volvo, nameplates from domestic automakers General Motors (GM), Ford (F) Motor and Chrysler Group (DCX) are missing from the top 10 best value list.

Big rebates and low-cost financing have made the Big Three’s cars affordable, but buyers think the incentives merely price them where they should be, Gorrell says. “Incentives are not equating with value for the domestics.”

He says the domestic brands need a “product renaissance” similar to Hyundai’s. “Then they will have to rebuild the trust they have lost. This will be tough.”

Besides Lexus, the Toyota brand scored well with its trucks but not as well with its cars. Much of the problems with Camry and Corolla are that they are older designs that lack features found in newer models, Gorrell says.

Even so, Toyota’s Prius hybrid scored as the best value vehicle overall. And Toyota’s new youth-oriented brand, Scion, tied with Mercedes-Benz as the No. 3 best valued band.

Do you really think I am gonna listen to people's opinion who drive 'Hyundai'?

I have renamed the thread to incorporate other car discussions... but before I go off on that direction, I will point out that in this same survey Jaguar X-Type suffered a body blow and came out the lowest. Personally, I don't give Jagf high marks for quality, anyway, but I am sure there are others who still like the British symbol of luxury.

On to other car topics. Purely anecdotal evidence suggests that VW's Touareg is really selling nicely. I see a lot of them on the roads here. I like the interior, although the fuel efficiency is lousy (no surprise for an SUV, though).

How'd Scion tie for three? Hasnt it been out in N.America for a couple of months only?

You r prly talking abt tC. The xA and xB are out for a while.

how does this stack up against JD powers list?

i know accent was the best selling small car of 2003 but hey they don't have minivans out right???? and there SUV sucks too need to put some time on that as the SUVs are popular in NA.

Well, Hyundai does have an SUV called Hyundai Santa Fe. Its ok. The 'other' Korean car company Kia has both an SUV and a Minivan. Their SUV is called Sorento and the minivan is called Sedona. Both are highly rated.

Hyndai has the best value for money, agreed.
I thought scion just came out last year. Probablly in Canada?

friend of mine has an hyundai elantra..its a small car..but honestly the way this 23 year old guy drives it...i am surprised it lasted him 6 years without any major problems and he still has it! currently he has over 230,000 kilometers. Hyundai use to be crap back in days but they have improved! I am not a big fan of hyundai, but i like of their models which looks like the jag from the front. xg200 is it?

Overall: Cheap and reliable!

well we have a KIA minivan called sedona for the last 3 yrs. my parents went and leased this car while i was away living in the hostel. i remember when i came home the first weekend i was so mad at them for buying the KIA but i must admit that we never had a problem with the van all this time and it is still running extremely well. i think there is one year left in the lease period so i dunno what my dad has in his mind about it. i think the standard for the amount of money we paid for it is very high.

But i personally don't like driving minivans but don't mind the space they some in with and mind you we have moved like 5 times in these 3 yrs to it did come in pretty handy :)

Does anyone knows performance vise which is better Toyota Echo Sedan or Hyundai Accent 4 doores? I am looking for something around 1.6L automatic for lease. So far i have these two options and Echo is kinda of more expensive. I haven't looked into KIA yet...it looks too small.

.wrong thread

echo for you all the way,its a much better refined car than Kia,which is still in the cooking pot.
