There was a thread about hadithic statements of trimming so the hairline is behind the lip line, reason being, contact with hair will make the drinikng water impure.
Sounds hygenic and why not.
Those days water was drunk in shared cups and you have to share your cup with somebody with a flowing musch it is a problem.
But how many share their water cup these days?
As to the dignity part, isn’t it true that at different points in time different appearances are considered dignified?
Makes me wonder why such aspects were given a religious falvor, thus complicating life

If a straw is used for drinking , and then there are tumblers , cups and glasses with built in straws , then there is no contact of mustache hair with the beverage you are drinking . In fact this can be the most hygienic method of drinking anything. Also Doctors recommend straw for drinking . Once I went to an orthopedic due to some neck pain , he gave me booklet called "Neck Owner's Manual." This manual specifically advised to use straw for drinking all the beverages, to save neck from getting strained.
This means if we can make sure that our mustache will not come in contact with water or anything we are drinking then we can grow mustache.
Ofcourse Islam should change with time. Not changing so is the root cause of all misery today!
As to mousch hair in water - sure others' hair is infinitely grosser but my main point was, questions hygene don't have to need religious resolution. Uneducated bedouins ma have needed that but do you seriously think you need to be told of how to drink water?
BTW there's another crowd that claims shaving the mousch and growing the beard is to distinguish from the non believers.
You can take tge pseudo-science and/or the near-racist reasoning. As WS said, as you like it!
Just as they didn't know why certain revelations were made and their benefits are known to us today because we're more advanced scientifically and understand things at a microscopic level. By the same logic, what we may not necessarily understand still today and are told to do may have to do with lack of knowledge. Science is a never-ending journey and i'm sure we'll advance and find out more and more in the future, which will confirm the teachings, as has been the case so far in history.

So next time i drink water from a water fond, i will take a straw with me.... And same with eating.... and also a person can grow nailsn and eat with spoons...
I dunt know y us muslims think that we are doing anyone a favor when we follow islam .... I beleive islam over modern science, so even if science says its better to grow mustache a muslim shldnt coz off course ALLAH knows the best and Islam is based on how ALLAH wants a muslim to live.
About chaning Islam time to time ... i dunt think there is a need, Islam is just perect since the first day to last. If we follow it properly, its not based on our own benifits.
Islamic laws are just made then way that they will work yesterday today and tommorow. For example 4 marriages they were allowed and still are even though most of muslims keep only one wife now. So it served yesterday as there were no restricitions and Islam put a limit for 4 but u dunt have to marry four so it serves today and u can marry one girl and try to keep her happy.
Same goes with mustache ppl didnt have starws back then and they were to keep msutache short .... And today u might have starws but ppl like me dont carry starws on em and even if you do how does growing long mustache help ? it doesnt even look good, if u wana have a Man's look grow beared. It will look much better. Nails same thing.
I guess that answer brother tariqs post too of changing Islam time to time .... The onez who did ended up a female leading a jamat ! do u support that ?
wasalm Aqeel
thanks brother teggy i had something similiar in mind but cudnt make it sound as simple and easy to understand as you.
I thought that the reason for trimming the moustache and growing the beard was to distinguish us from the Jews and Christians. In other words it is an Islamic identity. I think it was true then and still true today. Most people ... I mean 99 out of 100 who have our style of beards are Muslims.
This discounts those gothic rock artists who shave everything on their faces and let their just their chin hair grow downwards.

here is part of an article by Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam:

The trimming and shortening of the moustache has been emphatically mentioned in many narrations of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace), as we have seen above, thus, there is no need to repeat these narrations.
The Hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) mention two things:
1) Some state, “Shorten your moustaches.”
2) Others state, “Remove your moustaches.” (See: Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
Thus, all the Schools of Islamic law agree on the fact that, it is impermissible to leave the moustache in a way that it covers the upper lip, for it is against the Sunnah and unhygienic, especially when eating. It would be unlawful to grow a very long moustache, as is customary in many people.
Zayd ibn Arqam (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “Whosoever does not shorten his moustache is not one from us.” (Sunan Tirmizi, no. 2761, Sunan Nasa’i, no. 14 and Musnad Ahmad, 4/366, and Imam al-Tirmizi classed it to be authentic).

If you cannot arrange an straw all the time then you have no choice but to trim your mustache. Why make a big deal out of it. Nobody who has long mustache is going to go out of the fold of Islam , it is not like , mustache is basic pillar of our eman. iss main itna ghussay main aa-nay wali kia baat hay ?

There is not religious text i.e. Quran/Hadith that states such reasoning. The only reason given was so muslims could establish a physically distinct identity to those around them. Now it could be justified for numerous reasons that it was beneficial then and even now. However, growing a or trimming a moustache will not not put you in favor of Allah SWT IMHO unless it is portrayed by a character worthy of being exemplified. Those muslims who trim it thinking it is a religious edict or something that is required IMHO are mistaken and foolish. Physical appearance is always used to stand-out in a crowd, fashion is a testament to that. Though the reasons for standing out is what matters and whether those reasons are harmonious with the persons conduct or not.

Just my two cents...
I think its apologetic approach towards the issue. I can make hundreds of justifications and then just say just sit back and wait. After 1400 years my followers can say the same, just sit back and wait. Because as you said science is a never ending journey.
