Any suggestions??I took this class in Pak but they didnt really have a book: just photocopied notes. What are some of the good books out there, used in acadamia? I just want to review and reference and dont need anything fancy shmancy ![]()
whats ODE
Object development?
Ordinary Differential Equations??
Sorry for not being clear: Yes i meant an Ordinary Differential Eqs book ![]()
Any suggestions?
hmm…Ira the best book on differential equations i ever saw was the book we used for A level math…cant remmeber the name tho…dang it
been trying for the past couple minutes..maybe it’ll come to me..i cant even search fot it on net…hmmm
if any A level ppl r around…do u guys remember the book we used for the pure math, a level paper 1 part ![]()
it was called core math something right..? hmmm
Ira..from my experience, british/srilankan/indian authors r great for math books…for ppl like us who’ve gone to primary n secondary school in the des n r used to that style of math we can never feel comfortable with american authors for math, they rely too much on theory and end up making stuff more complicated than it is…
the books they usually use in us colleges for intro to calculus n intermediate cal by american authors r just horrible i think…i tried several of those books by diff authors when i was taking those courses but they never made sense to me…then i brought back my A level math book from pak and it made everything easy…
so if i were u i’d try to get a book by a brit/sriliankan/indo writer…if u get the book thats being used for A level math it might be good, coz in it they introduce ODE’s to students and explain everything step by step, with lots of examples and exercises with gradually increasing levels of difficulty…so its realy excellent…i learnt ode’s myself thru that book n it was great, the book was soo excellent it made it easy…dang… naam kyun naheen yaad aa rhaaa ![]()
you're so right Irem!
I haven't come across a Math textbook as brilliant as the ones I used for my A-Levels - I'm not sure if you're talking about the same one though...
I did P1,P2,P3,P4 and M1,M2 for my A-Levels and used the greenish ELBS books for that.
I did a quick search online but to no avail... Ira, if you're in Pakistan, I'm sure you can find the titles in a bookstore or the British Council Library.
YES!!! greenish book it was bro…and ELBS i think was the name of the publishers ure totally right…and i was talking abt the core math one for P1…but i just cant remember what its name was ![]()
Check the MIT opencourseware web site for the books they are using at MIT as a reference.
The books I remember are all engineering maths related but you can check them out
Engineering Maths and Further Engineering Maths by K.A.Stroud
Advanced Engineering Maths - Erwin Krezig
The three books may be a bit dated because it has been quite a while since I used them.
/\ I would second that, however the books used at MIT might have a higher abstraction level. They emphasize more on theoretical concepts, so if you are looking for more examples and problem solving approach, Elementary differential Equations by Boyce/Diprima can be a good choice.
Thank you so much for the replies guys.
Irem and Umar Talib , I am not in Pak, so it might be hard to find books by pakistani authors here. But I agree with waht you guys say about desi authors, much easier to understand :)
heretic, hmcq thanks for the book recommendations. I think I will go with the Boyce/Diprima. But I am going to look at our Math library one more time before I go ahead and buy one. :)
Gracias, everyone, once more :)
Ira, the books Irem and I mentioned are not by Pakistani authors... its just that we happened to read them when we were collegiate students in A-Levels in Pakistan. The books are by ELBS Longman publishers in the U.K. but we just don't remember the exact name of the book.
