obsession?

so my 24 month old has this obsession with irons… he’ll cry for hours if i dont give in..i actually gave him a iron to play with (cut the connection) so even if he plugs it in nothing will happen.. he’ll plays the ironing game all dayyy..this has been going on for a few months now…and he just recently realized that he has been givien a broken istri… i hide the real iron and he finds it all the time (under the bed, behind curtain..closets..)
its very frustrating i secretly iron cloth but hes smart the minute i pick up a kameez or pair of pants he knows and starts fussing before hand..

any idea on how to help him get over the istri?
someone told me to put his hand on very low temp iron..and it didnt work..
my concern is that it could be very dangerous since he knbows how to plug it in and doesnt really know that it can burn him

Re: obsession?

My eldest daughter, when she was very young, used to like plugging every plug in and out repeatedly. We used plug guards, kept plugs for irons, hair-dryers etc wrapped if not needed… but she always found a way. Anyway once she found a way, and stuck her finger in a plug socket… and she got a little electric shock! Needless to say that she’s never touched a plug or a socket ever again.

How about buying him his own little iron and ironing board? Most toy stores sell them… and they’re bright a colourful, so it should keep him entertained.

I’m not too sure about the “let him touch a warm iron” thing…but i guess children have to learn how to somehow… :bummer:

Re: obsession?

oh reminds me of my son when he was little he was obcessed with vaccum cleaner and he wanted the real one too even though he had a toy vaccum cleaner....also he wanted to COOK....which he still loves . he will turn 11 in august.

Re: obsession?

My 18 month old is OBSESSED with forks and knives, just anything sharp. If he sees one in my hand, he crys and crys for it.
I think it's because they sense that we don't want them to have it. It must have gotten a strong reaction from us , like "NO"!, and that's why they want it more.
Oh well, they'll grow out of it, hopefully :)

Re: obsession?

Buy the toy iron and ironing stand and give him those. I have seen those being sold at toys r us.
He seems to be inclined to start a laundry chain when he grows up. Do not be hindrance in his career goals. :D just kidding.

Re: obsession?

^lol aajj kal kai bachae barae samaj daar hain...my daughter likes iron, and cell phone etc, and i bought toy cell phone, and she know konsi real hai...so please don't even try getting toy stuff.

Re: obsession?

^ Oh, don’t get me started on children messing around with your mobile phones… a couple of years back, my hubby was (un)pleasantly surprised when the monthly bill came in for my mobile… £190 for “web browsing”… :hayaa:

Re: obsession?

lol@ maroush, exactly with me too, she likes pressing buttons, and she goes through web browsing so i have to end up paying extra $5 bucks...lol

LOL, Yeah I ended up giving my old cell phone to my daughter when I got new one and she was a happy camper because she could see it was working, LOL , not.
Like it had all the bells and whistles but it was not activated.

Re: obsession?

Pottery barn kids use to have the CUTEST ioning board and iron. I think fisher price makes one too.

My daughter chewed my dad's cell phone antenna when she was teething. I think the whole thing just didn't work beause she drolled so much on it. He obviously had to get a new one.

sorry Naanooo.

Re: obsession?

thanx everyone for advice ... ive tried the toy iron...didnt work to well

and about the cell phone...thats just another story :@: the 1st thing he does is go onthe web...lol kids...

Re: obsession?

My little brother was OBSESSED with cooking, he always wanted a pot and spoon and to stir it around....but not on the floor or on the bed but on the cooker!

My mum would go insane with worry but the way she got him out of the habit was let him help her with cooking...i think he wanted to be like her..so he would pass her stuff.

Maybe you can tell him to pass you the clothes....or maybe you could iron together? so him on his toy one at the same time?

Im not a mummy so im probs completely wrong haha

Re: obsession?

my nephew's obsessed with tools, a few weeks ago I saw him waving around a REAL drill and actually using it on his lil bro. It was a real drill but I think there was no nail in it, so it was flat and harmless..but still.
