Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

The effects of how much this guy hurts Obama remains to be seen but Obama is going to need to increase his distance from him even though Wright is not involved with Obama’s campaign in anyway. Out of all the stories which Obama has brushed off successfully, this is the one that could cause a mark.

Sen. Barack Obama’s pastor says blacks should not sing “God Bless America” but “God damn America.”

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s pastor for the last 20 years at the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago’s south side, has a long history of what even Obama’s campaign aides concede is “inflammatory rhetoric,” including the assertion that the United States brought on the 9/11 attacks with its own “terrorism.”
In a campaign appearance earlier this month, Sen. Obama said, “I don’t think my church is actually particularly controversial.” He said Rev. Wright “is like an old uncle who says things I don’t always agree with,” telling a Jewish group that everyone has someone like that in their family.
Rev. Wright married Obama and his wife Michelle, baptized their two daughters and is credited by Obama for the title of his book, “The Audacity of Hope.”

An ABC News review of dozens of Rev. Wright’s sermons, offered for sale by the church, found repeated denunciations of the U.S. based on what he described as his reading of the Gospels and the treatment of black Americans.
“The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people,” he said in a 2003 sermon. “God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”

In addition to damning America, he told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001 that the United States had brought on al Qaeda’s attacks because of its own terrorism.

“We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye,” Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.
“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost,” he told his congregation.

Sen. Obama told the New York Times he was not at the church on the day of Rev. Wright’s 9/11 sermon. “The violence of 9/11 was inexcusable and without justification,” Obama said in a recent interview. “It sounds like he was trying to be provocative,” Obama told the paper.
Rev. Wright, who announced his retirement last month, has built a large and loyal following at his church with his mesmerizing sermons, mixing traditional spiritual content and his views on contemporary issues.

“I wouldn’t call it radical. I call it being black in America,” said one congregation member outside the church last Sunday.
“He has impacted the life of Barack Obama so much so that he wants to portray that feeling he got from Rev. Wright onto the country because we all need something positive,” said another member of the congregation.

Rev. Wright, who declined to be interviewed by ABC News, is considered one of the country’s 10 most influential black pastors, according to members of the Obama campaign.
Obama has praised at least one aspect of Rev. Wright’s approach, referring to his “social gospel” and his focus on Africa, “and I agree with him on that.”
Sen. Obama declined to comment on Rev. Wright’s denunciations of the United States, but a campaign religious adviser, Shaun Casey, appearing on “Good Morning America” Thursday, said Obama “had repudiated” those comments.

In a statement to ABCNews.com, Obama’s press spokesman Bill Burton said, “Sen. Obama has said repeatedly that personal attacks such as this have no place in this campaign or our politics, whether they’re offered from a platform at a rally or the pulpit of a church. Sen. Obama does not think of the pastor of his church in political terms. Like a member of his family, there are things he says with which Sen. Obama deeply disagrees. But now that he is retired, that doesn’t detract from Sen. Obama’s affection for Rev. Wright or his appreciation for the good works he has done.”

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

Lol, a politically incorrect old man. Don't know what actually happened, just brabing about the pure souls in Washington.

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

"We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye," Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.
"We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost," he told his congregation.

Its was the Jap ans who invaded USA territory on Dec 7 , 1942 , . It was them that butchered the Koreans and Chinese. They were warned to give up but would not. The bombings ended the war. End of story. To this day kids in japan are not taught japan was the agressor in the war

Terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans? Duh!- someone smoking bad, bad crack.

In addition!!!!!!!!!

*Barack Obama's unwillingness to wear flag pins or place his hand on his heart during the National ANthem is starting to make sense now. So are his wife's diatribes against America, a country in which she has felt no pride. So too is the lifetime achivement award Obama's church dedicated to rabid racist demagogue Louis Farrakhan. And to think Obama donated 22,000 dollars to the church in 2006. *

*The reason Obama preaches sermons of utopia, peace, change, change, and change is because he has followed and ingrained the teachings of his mentor. Deep little dirty dark secret of Obama's view of America is obviously coming out as he obviously venerates Wright. And what is Wright complaining about he drives around in a Mercedes, clearly America has been good to this senile pontificate of hatred for America. *

Yes, America has been so bad to the blacks that poor Obama is forced into the menial job of running for president.

This does not discount the fact lots of horrible things were done to blacks by some KKK mentality whites, but heck today they have so much opportunity , and as Bill Cosby has said , the youth are pissing it away. They think studying, reading a book and working is a dirty thing to do.

Re: Obama’s former pastor becoming major headache

Obama skirting the issue. Is there a video out there with Obama in attendance at the church while the pastor spews hatred against America?

Obama is weak, weak, weak, YOu mean Obama you had no idea? Having known the pastor for 20 years, regard him as your mentor, have him as your religious advisor, and you Obama never ever heard his diatribe knowing full well what Mr. Farrahkan was honored by the church. Mr. Obama will you state that you don’t even know the Farrahkan spews. :o:o:o

Even after you wife publicly declared she had no respect for America until you ran for office?? Mr. Obama, you lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

now now why would this old black man be so pissed off? It's not like his people were kept as slaves and face instiuitional racism.

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

Truth hurts yo

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

Obama did admit on CNN tonight he had heard some allegations made in the past. What????????????????????

He did not take a serious look at that time and today finally because its hit everyone's attention he decides to distance himself and denounce what the pastor has preached? Today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

why the delay

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

If this was an Iranian cleric speaking against Iran or a Muslim cleric speaking against Islam, then as always, he would be hailed as a hero for speaking his mind...But since, this happens to be a Christian preacher denouncing atrocities by the US, he has become a nutcase...

And the same jackals who laude outspokenness in other cultures will denounce outspokenness about their culture...

Amen brother...Hail America...And don't you believe otherwise...

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

I can understand Rev Wright's view.

What I can't accept is Obama saying he had no idea his pastor preached like that and had such ideas. THis is a man who is like a father-grandfather to him? And yet half hour into a CNN interview after having denied hearing Rev Wright's comments he admits he heard some whispers when starting his campaign. Uh??? And then he distance himself immediately, denounces the pastor's outburst and removes him as his religious politcal advisor.

There seems to be too much whitewashing by Obama. It's Obama the preacher, Obama the fantasist, Obama the pastor, chnage, change, change. Sounds good to simple minds. Obama's rehetoric has no substance but it sounds good on the podium ----- a smooth talker with preachly finesse.

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

you gotta admit, this pastor has a point. If i was obama, i'd be dead proud.

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

Hyper bro? How come you mix things so badly?

This phony paster talked bad about America (Gad-Damn-America).
Any preacher in Pakistan saying (Gad-Damn-Pakistan) will be considered awful as well.

Did you consider taking logic 101 to brush your skills bro?

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

I did take logic and I hated it...

Now here's the point of logic you missed in my post:

If any Muslim talks bad about Islam, he is immediately the center of attention for news media and is hyped up. Major examples are: Salman Rushdie, Irshad Manji, Ayan Hirsi, Amina Wadud, Taslima Nasreen...

This pastor just stated the obvious such as bombing Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Vietnam, Iraq and killing people in the millions...That is a fact, not an anti-American statement yet the media portrays it to be as such...

Everyone knows Americans don't value life unless it is their own otherwise no human alive on the planet could have stated that the lives of half a million children 'is an acceptable risk' except an American leader...Yet, to state such a thing would be considered anti-American...You cannot state that the bombing of innocent civilians in Nagasaki and Hiroshima were attacks on non-combatants or that it was bad...You cannot state that it is a crime against humanity that 6 million innocent Vietnamese men, women and children died for nothing at the hands of Americans, for that is anti-American...You cannot state that the US is occupying Iraq and inflicting collective punishment on an entire nation and using chemical weapons and DU ammunition which will radiate the earth for 10,000 years crippling future generations...You cannot state that otherwise your patriotism will be questioned...

But it's fine if your humanity is questioned...Who cares if we nuke the whole of Middle East for our gains...Humanity being questioned is reserved for those different from us, like Bin Laden who is an evil barbarian with no regard for human life...

But since this pastor stated the obvious, he is an anti-American as O'Reilly and Glen Beck exclaim...

Re: Obama's former pastor becoming major headache

There is a vastly major difference between criticizing Islam and clerics , mullahs etc versus criticizing a cleric, priests , rabbie or pastor or religion in America
Many muslims of muslim origin who question and critique Islam constructively are offered death sentence on their heads. ie Salman Rushdie, Hisi Ali, Wafa Sultan, Allam, Irshad Manji and regular everyday muslims.

At least in America you can criticise a cleric , pastor, or religion and no offer of death . Name one person in America who has criticized the Pastor has been threatened with a bounty on the head?

*Welcome to Free Speech In America and Free Criticism. *

I think the pastor was mostly targeted for his "God Damn America' the rest is not denied by america citizens. Name me one person who has denied what Rev. Wright said was factually wrong? Of course. Lets not loose ourselves in the debate and realize the anger is Rev. Wright spewing 'God Damn America' . and notice no one has offered a bounty or fatwa on his head.

Can you say if the same occurred in an Islamic country or outside an Islamic country there wouldn't be foaming mullahs and clerics issueing fatwas with US dollar amounts?

*Japan by the way, knew atomic bombs were in existence , and they attacked the south pacific people of Korea, and China with such zeal and bloodlust and they refused to stop. *

Ask yourself , if it did not happen how many more years and how many more dead chinese, koreans, indonesians and polynesians, and melonesians would add to the Japanese war.
