US President Barack Obama has staunchly defended controversial plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero in New York.
Opponents have protested against the construction of an Islamic cultural centre and mosque several hundred feet away from the site of the Twin Towers.
Mr Obama acknowledged "sensitivities" surround the 9/11 site, but said **Muslims have the same right to practice their religion "as anyone else".**
"Our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable," Mr Obama said.

^ I would like to hear from American Muslims on how they feel living in a country that is hated by muslims living overseas and how theyfeel living there after all those war crimes that it has committed.
Re: Obama defends right to build mosque near 9/11 site
Sad things is that the muslims here are seeing this as a "victory" , it would indeed be a pyrrhic victory if at all.
Muslims here in US got to realize are they americans first or muslims first? if latter than they should migrate to a muslim country if not they should learn to live as americans first.
The people who profit most from this are the warmongering evangelicals and the wahabi terrorists, the republicans like gingrich and palin are going to reap the political rewards. Most average americans are very alienated against muslims today, just like any other people ( including muslims) they are thrilled by cheap sensationalism and empty rhetoric. This proposal will only fan these sentiments even more.
Edit: But kudos to him for standing up for everyone’s rights. Also, a great leader doesn’t focus on getting re-elected but on making a difference in people’s lives.

That is the funniest thing I read all week.
I know it does sound funny when you consider the facts that the CIA, FBI and NSA all knew Ossama was upto some thing back in year 2001.......and knowingly they let it happen!
