The imprisoned football legend and movie star says that he has found a new faith in the Nevada prison, where he has been living since 2008. O.J. Simpson’s sentence stems from charges of kidnapping and armed robbery in relation to an incident where he claims he was taking back memorabilia that he was never fully paid for.
The incident took place at the Palace Station hotel-and-casino in Las Vegas. Now, in the same Vegas area prison where he has been carrying out his sentence, he has been studying Islam and the Qur’an. Other inmates say that he is professing the new found faith openly and is very serious about it.
One inmate explained that “O.J. really thought that he was going to be successful in a bid for a new trial and eventually be released from prison. But now he’s not eligible for parole until late 2017, which has angered him.”
In a bid to change his life, he has looked inward. Through his friendship with former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, the 67-year-old Simpson has taken on the study of Islam and its pillars of faith, but according to his cellmate, his first Ramadan fast was a rough one, causing the Juice to break fast a few times
“O.J. didn’t quite make it through the entire fasting process. He cheated during the day, and bought snacks from the prison canteen. But he’s really serious about converting to Islam. O.J. even made himself a prayer rug for his prison cell. He really likes the idea that upon converting to Islam, all of his previous sins are forgiven. O.J. has a lot to be forgiven for.”
this news brings negative publicity to Islam. we needed conversions of those like him as if he is such an angel.
i don’t think Allah will let him off the hook without being punished for his crimes. when Huquuq-ul-'Ibaad is involved [in cases where it’s worst kind has taken place like MURDER], the divine justice demands that the perpetrator of a heinous crime be punished.
Re post 3, I don’t see why this is negative news. If the purpose of religion is to heal and make a person whole, religions should not have the welcome mat out only for good citizens.
haven’t you heard about several so called conversion of Mike Tyson, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and others before?
first of all, such news are fake, untrue and fabricated. secondly, the masses think that why these characters like OJ convert to Islam? they equate bad things with Islam and hence they wonder why Islam can only attract those criminals…did you know that in the US, most black people in jails convert to Islam. when intellectuals convert, it doesn’t make the news.
First of all the criminal justice system is not always fair. Blacks get imprisoned at a much higher rate for the same crime. To beat up on them further when they are serving their time- I don’t know what to call that. Certainly not religious. That I am sure of.
Also, as an example, Mohammad Ali wanted to get rid of his slave name Casius Clay. And move towards a faith that had done him no harm. (Am not saying christianity was bad to his ancestors. But those who were bad to his ancestors were christians.)
