NY - I want to avoid (or minimize) the toll - Is there any way out?

I have to visit NY and I m staying at a hotel at Newark Airport. Now I am in a situation that I have to make frequent visits to Manhattan (business trip) and a friend of mine in NJ (total 5/6 trips). I don’t want to pay TOLL on all the trips as that might round up to 30/35$ per trip (2 way).

So is there any way out to avoid these tolls? Any Freeway that avoid these bridges and tunnels (or at least most of those)? Now for me subway is not an option.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but.... I really don't think there is any way to enter NY from NJ without having to pay the toll.
last time i was there the toll to enter NY was 4 dollars and u didn't have to pay anything to return to NJ...i don't think thats changed!
so i don't know where u r getting the 30-35 dollars per trip?

umm no i dun think there r any ways of avoiding tollz unless u want to swim to NJ:p

The toll is $7 now through the Verrazano Bridge. However, there is no way of avoiding the toll from NY to NJ and vice versa.

okay.. from Newark .. u can go trough statenisland wid RT 440 but its not free either.they charge $6. and Verrazano Bridge is free from NJ side but its $7 from NYC, as sweetpie said. so basically, u gonna have to pay atleast $13 for a trip.

but one of uncle knows how to get there for free.. but it takes a lot time though :(

fly.

Get arrested.

It would cost you $9 round trip if you take the NJ transit from Newark Penn. Then take a day pass for $7 for teh subway in NYC and voila...$16 kick ass trip.

Take any free bridge to Manhattan from Queens (Queens Bridge) or Brooklyn (Brooklyn Bridge) then take FDR Drive to Goerge Washington Bridge and here u are in NJ without toll.. :) but coming back $4 must at Washington Bridge :-)

Driving into Manhattan, even if there are no tolls, is not very smart. If you're in Newark airport or nearby hotel, catch the Manhattan shuttle. Use cabs / subway in the city. You'll be healthier wealthier and happier.
