Midwives say they’re fine to eat… but desi mums say don’t risk it. I’ve also read the latest medical advise is they’re fine to eat UNLESS you have a member in your immediate family with a nut allergy.
I don’t see why this would be an issue. Nuts are a good source of protein and healthy fats. Just make sure they’re fresh and make sure your tummy handles them well.
Hmm…I wonder if it’s because nuts are considered to have a garam effect on the body. Desi hakeems, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, and homeopaths believe foods have a taseer …a warm, cooling, or neutral effect on the body.
Wow no-one has heard of it? Hmmm… well in the days of my mum they used to warn against eating nuts in pregnancy (especially peanuts) as it increases the likelihood of your child having a nut allergy. This website nicely illustrates the change in way of thinking: Food Standards Agency - Peanuts during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and early childhood
This evidence is still IMO in it’s infancy… so I don’t want to take any risks. Particularly as my brother has a (not so severe but existent nonetheless) nut allergy. I just wondered what others are doing.
You may have heard that some women, in the past, have chosen not to eat peanuts when they are pregnant. This is because the Government previously advised women that they may wish to avoid eating peanuts during pregnancy if there was a history of allergy in their child’s immediate family (such as asthma, eczema, hayfever, food allergy or other types of allergy). **But this advice has now been changed because the latest research has shown that there is no clear evidence to say that eating or not eating peanuts during pregnancy affects the chances of your baby developing a peanut allergy.

I have never heard of this before. Nor has my OB ever asked me if anyone in my immediate family is allergic to nuts. I think if it really was a risk than OB’s would be asking you this on the initial appointment, when they ask about other immediate family diseases … no?
Government are always changing regulations though. My mum tells me when us lot were kids midwives used to encourage bottle feeding over breast, because with bottle you can measure the exact intake of milk the baby has taken. Nowadays everyone is encouraging breast is best!
I haven’t had an initial appointment with a midwife yet as I’m still in the early stages of pregnancy so I think I’ll wait until I speak to her before I decide whether or not to have peanut butter on my toast
