When it comes to crib bedding, what are the things one should keep in mind?
Those 4 or 5 piece sets available at babies r us or Target etc, look really good but are those comforters actually practical?
If not using such comforters, what kinda blankets are better?
I heard that the bumpers are a hazard and shouldn’t be used for newborns??
And what kind of protective covering does a crib mattress require?
why are bumpers a hazard to newborns? my son has slept from birth to now (he is mashallah 8 months) in a crib with a bumper..
i dont do blankets for him cuz they just gather way too much dust.. and may trigger allergic reactions as they gather so much dust.. i prefer a duvet for him.. change his bedding once a week
i bought 3 complete bedding sets.. which had fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillowcase, quilt cover and bumper.
i change the bumper once a month.. bought lots of bedsets which just had flat sheet and pillow case and quilt cover that matched teh 3 bumpers... so the bedding wouldnt look odd.. but u dont really need so many bumpers.. u need more of the actual bedsheet, quilt cover adn pillowcase..
i put a breathable rubber like protective sheet a few inches down where the baby's bum would normally be.. its like a metre long and wide.. i thought i wanted to protect the matress just incase he leaks or something.. ontop of that i put a fitted sheet and then a flat sheet...
I read on another forum, and then googled it, that bumpers can pose a suffocation/strangulation hazard(due to its cords when left untied),especially in babies who are old enough to sit themselves up or stand in the crib.So that was a concern.
so the protective thing for the mattress is just a like a rubber sheet and not something which will fit like a fabric fitted sheet on top of the mattress??
ok for me.. its a mattress.. then there is the top mattress.. on top of that is the rubber sheet .. its just a flat sheet.. i dont think i have ever seen a fitted rubber sheet.. ontop of the rubber sheet.. i have the fitted sheet which covers the whole matress.. then i lay on the matching bedding like flat sheet with pillow case and quilt cover... i only change the fitted sheet once a month as the baby doesnt lie directly on it so it doesnt get dirty that fast..
how long ARE those cords for bumpers??? ours are long enough to JUST about make a bow tie outta them... like.. max 7cm long.. i cant see how any baby can choke or strangle themselves on that? maybe some bumpers do have longer cords ... i say check them out and then buy the ones with shorter cords.
we've always had bumpers for babies in our family.. we have some pretty wild sleepers in the family like my son who will thrash around in the crib.. ic ant imagine him always bumping his head on teh railings if there were no bumper. ouch
I got a breathable mesh bumper from BRU for her crib and its working fine for us. But i also didnt put the bumper in till she was able to hold her neck up and i was afraid she will bump her head in the railings and hurt herself. It is something like this:
We also never bought a bedding set since i thought she wouldnt use the quilt/comforter it came with. I do have a couple sets of plain (nice and soft) sheets and several blankets so we interchange with that. She is so young that she doesnt care about her bedding and i iddnt want to buy one set and then be bound with the design i get. This way i can change anytime i want and get whatever colors i want just by changing the sheets.
To protect the mattress i got one of these:
But to be honest, i havent had to use this much, Alhamd. I had it on for a few months and removed it once for washing and havent put in on yet. But its always a good idea to have this in case of accidents.
