On a very non-serious note , we keyboard junkies are very billy type of people . Don't take use very seriously doesn't matter how macho we act here :)
My main question was regarding dropping hints , and how long a man should wait before he can finally consider it a yah or nah . Few men are just most persistent and few are not . But I think in the end consistency finally pays . :p

if one is getting an obvious no, one should step back. If one is getting confusing signals then there is a problem in communication. He should open up a little bit and stop dropping subtle hints and openly ask if she is interested in pursuing a friendship

I don't believe in attempting again and again for the same person. If you are rejected once, try your luck on the next person otherwise you will be looked at as a leech which will reduce your chances further.
And I personally don't go near a girl who doesn't appear friendly or available.

Guys life is busy , isn't it . With all the politics , new video games , business ideas , car models , movies & jokes that we have to discuss , there is very little time left that we can hit on women . So what is your threshold of the number of attempts , before you give up ? If it is a variable then why and how much it varies ?
Keep trying in legitimate ways until you get rejected harshly!. At least that is what i would do.

I am guilty of trying harder than what was warranted on at least one occasion :--/ kam bakht sunti hi nai thi. So yeah ... I said ... to hell with her and got engaged to a much nicer girl. Then suddenly my stock went up and the loser girl started being nicer, friendlier than before and started calling me out for lunch etc. But of course by then she didn't stand a chance.
