ntldr is missing

I’m having problem with a PC with Windows XP. It gives “NTLDR is missing” error.
When I go to xp recovery console, it gives me 2 options to choose from
D:\MiniNT
F:\Windows

When I go to C:\ I cannot list any files. It says "An error occurred during directory enumeration. I’m pritty sure thats where Windows was installed. I googled for answers, but none seem to work in my situation. I tried copying ntdetect.com and ntldr files from E: (Windows CD) to C:, but I can’t.

I think what may have happened is that the C drive has changed itself to F and therefore gives “NTLDR is missing” at startup since it is looking for C.

Let me know if you have any suggestions on what to do.

Thanks.

Repair.

Re: ntldr is missing

Try re-writing the Master Boot Record with the following command:

“fdisk /mbr”

For details on what it does refer to the following article:

Re: ntldr is missing

Tofi - the fdisk command is not available in XP recovery console. That's what I attempted to do first.

Re: ntldr is missing

Oh right, XP! :)
Boot from the windows XP CD, press the "R" key in the setup in order to start the restoration console. Select your windows XP installation from the list, and enter the administrator password.
Enter the command: "FIXMBR" (without the quotes) at the input prompt and confirm the next question with a "Y" (without the quotes). Use exit to restore the computer.

Re: ntldr is missing

I already tried fixmbr but it didn't do anything.

Re: ntldr is missing

Actually, disregard my previous post. I tried it now and I remember what happened when I did that. It comes with a message
"This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record. fixmbr may damage your partition tables if you proceed. This could cause all the partitions on the current had disk to become inaccessible. If you are not haivng problems accessing yoru drive, do not contiue. Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?"

I said no. Should I say yes and continue? Will it wipe off my hard drive?

Re: ntldr is missing

Dont

Re: ntldr is missing

Yes, try "yes". Its the MBR. BUTTTTTT, make a backup always.

Re: ntldr is missing

How can I make a backup in this situation? I can't see the files in C drive.

Re: ntldr is missing

Try plugging the drive as an add-on drive in another computer.

Re: ntldr is missing

Its a laptop, so that is not very feasible.

Re: ntldr is missing

Depends on the laptop it could be. e.g. most Dell’s HD’s are very easy to take out. But its a totally different story with a Sony lappy. Then you can get this to plug the drive into:

Re: ntldr is missing

Tofi - I don't have the stage rack to plug into. Any other option besides removing the disk?
Will fixmbr erase data on my HD?

Re: ntldr is missing

It shouldn't
