Musharraf appeals for reconciliation amid impeachment threat

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday called for political reconciliation in Pakistan, in an apparent appeal to opponents who are gearing up to impeach the key US anti-terror ally.

Making his first public comments since the ruling coalition announced impeachment plans last week, Musharraf told a function on the eve of Pakistan’s 61st Independence Day that there was a “conspiracy” to weaken the country.

It’s my appeal that we should adopt a reconciliatory approach so that stability should return,” Musharraf told an audience of allies at the presidency in Islamabad in a speech that was televised live.

Because if there is stability we can fight terrorism, if we have a strong economy we can fight terrorism, and we should all put aside our differences and work to make Pakistan strong,” he said. {ehtasab: Playing terrorism card even for internal politics now?}

His appeal came hours after legislators in southern Sindh province became the third of Pakistan’s four provincial assemblies to approve a motion calling on Musharraf to face a vote of confidence or else be impeached.

Coalition leaders Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto, and Nawaz Sharif, the man Musharraf ousted in a coup in 1999, said last Thursday that they would seek the president’s impeachment.

The provincial votes are meant to ratchet up the pressure on Musharraf to quit before he is pushed out of power, although a presidential spokesman has repeatedly denied that he will resign.

Musharraf did not refer directly to the impeachment issue but he said that Pakistan, beset by Islamic militancy and economic meltdown, was “passing through a very critical moment in its history”.

“In my view, someone is conspiring against our institutions either internally or externally,” said Musharraf, wearing an open necked shirt and blazer.

“But I assure you that the nation will stand together like it did in 1947 and it will prove that Pakistan will remain intact despite the predictions of its enemies,” he added.

The coalition says it is still finalising a charge sheet against Musharraf and expects to introduce the impeachment motion in the national parliament next week.

It needs a two-thirds majority in a combined sitting of the upper and lower houses to topple Musharraf, who could be the first president to be impeached in Pakistan’s history

Reconciliation? “I scratched your back, please scratch my back now”, lets see what happens.

I am not sure but can someone make this clear to me. Its fine they wana make a charge sheet, But dont they have to provide proof for their allegations?

Just wondering. Also the Yahoo News failed to write other things he said during the speech, which wouldve been useful. This is truly wat you call taking something out of context.

But the funny thing is, we need to think, WHO IS ACTUALLY MAKING THE CHARGE SHEET??? the same mr 10% and MR Freezing peopls Accounts???

Only in Pakistan. Funny the nation follows.

It is correctly said, the leaders represent how the nation behaves.

Re: NRO for Musharraf please!?

The validity of any charge sheet is kinda irrelevant here. Parliament votes on impeachment basically based on party-lines. Doesn't matter if charges in the Charge Sheet are real or not. Parliamentarians will vote based on what their party has decided.

I doubt this thing will even get to a vote. With our without a "deal", Mushy will resign and leave office prior to any vote. His best hope is to get a deal where he is provided amnesty from any prosecution (especially on charges of high treason). When push comes to shove, MQM will abstain from voting and PML(Q) just doesn't have the kinda numbers to make any significant impact here. All other political parties will find it very hard to support a military dictator. The only leverage Musharaf has is that Gen Kiyani will broker a safe passage for his former boss.

It is very similar to the banana justice we saw last year, charge sheet against CJ, supreme council rejected, as a result whole SC got replaced with new ones and the charge sheet is to be seen nowhere now.

Similarly, charge sheet will be presented, some hot-air will be exchanged, parties will vote based on party’s decision (only if it gets to the point of voting as mentioned by Faisal above).

Also funny is that the these are same clowns who were regarded by Mush as corrupt most then “pardoned” by himself (most likely with some outside danda) and now these clowns will charge-sheet Mush :hehe:
