Now then, who was the best batsman of the modern era?

Yes, this debate has been sparked endlessly but since Tugga has just retired from cricket after playing his last test match, I think its appropriate to renew this argument. And by modern era I mean the present generation of cricketers.

Should the best batsman be the most talented one? Or should it be the grittiest of them all?

I would pick Steve Waugh - not because he is retiring, but because he alwayz performed when Australia needed him to. Sachin would be a close second for me. What do u guyz think?

and we just forget LARA????

Waugh,Dravid and Lara... They always perform when there team needs them... Tendulkar though make a lot of runs but not when his team needs it the most...

  • Little Master Tendi’
  • Rahul Dravid
  • Brian Lara
  • Yousuf Youhana :dhimpak:
  • Ricky Ponting

Tendulkar all the way us ke baad Lara

Shaihd Afridi followed closely by Saleem Elahi :Pagri:

With the recent conclusion of the test series, I can rate Ponting and Dravid right up there along Hayden, Lara, Tendulkar & Waugh.
It is very difficult to separate these guys into categories.
But the most talented of the lot has to be Tendulkar and Lara.
But consistency counts, and none can pass Dravid and Ponting.

Hayden is a dominating batsman, on his day, he can bat like he is the greatest ever, Waugh is a plain match winner.

This planet has never seen a better batsman than Tendulkar. Period!

You obviously haven't seen Viv Richards bat then.

wat abt imran nazir?

Tendi... Lara , Ponting and Inzi ( without captaincy :smack )

^ for me it’s Sir Richards all the way—the best batsman of modern times :k:

smooth_guy, I agree, Sachin is the best batsman in the world today.Technically brilliant he ranks better than Lara in terms of skill , talent and poise.

But the greatest batsman of all time would have to be Sir Don Bradman ,Sir Gary Sobers and Sir Viv Richards in that order. Sachin Tendulkar would rank next along with Graham Pollock .The reason why Richards achievements are bigger than Sachin’s is that he clobbered and dominated bowling in the era of lillee , hadlee, thommo and imran khan on all types of pitches . More importantly he was a hundred percent team man, his one and only goal was to embellish the game with his skills with no selfish motive. that’s why he is honored with “Sir” which his contemporaries did not achieve. Whereas Sachin has hardly ever played a match winning innings (like Steve Waugh has done so many times )when the team needed most. Not even 1 of sachins centuries were in the wisdens top 100 out in 2001(why even laxmans 286 is of much value than any of sachins innings). Yeah a lot has happened since, but still.

Just my opinion.

Well..Post clealry says “Best batsman of MODERN era”..so there is no point discussing Bradman and Sobers.
Now question comes, what poster think as modern era.If it is 90s then it has to be Sachin and Lara.
But it it includes 70s and 80s then ..it will be Richard,Gavaskar and Greg Chappel.I know few will raise eyebrows on gavaskar’s name. But Richard and Chappel didnt have to play both of Aussies(Lille,Thomo) and Windies(Marshal,Garner,Holding) bowlers. Gavaskar’s record against supposedly world best bowling lineup ( windies lineuop of 70s and 80s) is simple Best.No one even comes close.

But if we are talking all time great then BRADMAN is way above all these guys.

I was replying to smooth_guy and ehsan bhai, and in the process, probably went off topic. Maybe we can open a separate thread for the best batsman of all time. But judging by your reply, I'm guessing this topic must have been discussed several times already.

There is nothing to discuss when it comes to best batsman of all time.No one comes close to Bradman. Average of 99 and century every 2.3 innning is no joke. :D

So if we start that thread it will have only one post. There is no scope for discussion. :D

well you could start off the thread with ur post on Bradman, and we can all post " I agree" , all 20,000 ( im guessing) members of GS, no? btw, smooth_guy doesnt seem to agree though. you might be surprised

p.s I was more thinking of a top5 list or something :p

FB, I agree with your choice of Gavaskar. having seen him play, apart from his now infamous innings in the first world cup, he was just a class apart and for me a class above Sachin.
