Since I’ve never formally studied Urdu like one does in school, my Urdu is of a very basic nature, ie what we speak at home. If I was to read urdu poetry or literature I doubt I’d understand what the meaning is. So could I get some nice mushkil urdu words or sayings that I can impress my parents with?

start with minute changes to everyday sentences
pani chalak gaya instead of pani gir gaya
meri patloon bheeg gayi instead of i drenched my pants
usne mujhe behooda kaha instead of she complimented my eyes

buy a copy of deewan-e-ghalib, start reading and ask whenever u dont understand a word/phrase....
soon u'll be one of the best urdudaans around....
P.S. if u can go thru one single ghazal without having any difficulty u deserve a phd in urdu....

Urdu has not future, you should instead concentrate on Punjabi, which will one day be the official language of the greater Punjab....

which punjabi are u referring to. I've grown up in upper punjab and can easily understand the dialect but the language that sikhs speak goes over me.

Mohtaram yaad to ap ko aaya lekin Faiz saheb nay apni qabr main karwat zaroor li hogi k unn k kalaam ko kissi duusray shayer say mansoob kiya janay laga hai.
Sahir ka maqam apni jagah – lekin mundarja baalaa nazm FAIZ AHMED FAIZ ki hai aur yaqeenan kaha jasakta hai FAIZ THE GREAT.

haha! that’s exactly what I tell my friends… ‘urdu ka bera-ghark kar do to punjabi ban jati hai’. No offence intended to Punjabi guppies.
cat-woman, get ‘urdu ka qaida’ and take it from there or forget being able to read and write as you’re past that age (it wouldn’t do you much good anyway). Instead, get your parents to speak khalis Urdu with you and help you out with difficult words. I’m sure you’ll start to pick up fast, insha’Allah.
