Former Test captain Rameez Raja is said to have submitted his resignation as chief executive of the board with the outgoing Chairman Lt. General Tauqir Zia. ‘The News’ has learnt that Rameez has also given in his resignation to Tauqir Zia but no decision had been taken on it.
Rameez has been one of the most trusted and close aides of the General in the last four years and sources said Tauqir informed him in advance about the fact that he had submitted his resignation.
Rameez gave an indication of his future plans when he told this correspondent after Tauqir’s announcement that he had resigned that perhaps four years was a long time for anyone to serve Pakistan cricket and let others come in and take their shot.
Questions are being asked as to what led Tauqir to submit his resignation and have it accepted in the middle of a series. However, if one goes by the chain of events that happened last week one gets some hints of what could have transpired.
On November 21, Aamer Sohail announced the teams for the New Zealand series and tour of India by the Pakistan A team, surprisingly including Junaid Zia in the senior team even though he did not feature in the probables for the New Zealand series.
On November 22nd Tauqir Zia called up the Board offices and had his son Junaid Zia withdrawn from the senior team for the New Zealand series and he was instead put into the Pakistan A side.
On November 23rd Tauqir submitted his resignation to President Musharraf. But the interesting part is that the President did not accept the resignation and it was left with him for sometime. On December 1 the resignation was accepted. The News
