When you start accepting when they say "I am Punjabi" then its just a sign of accepting cracks in the foundation, then better start handing out Punjab passports too.
Thats not necessarily true for India which has so many diverse cultural/ethnic groups. I think its perfectly alright to say "I am a Punjabi" to a fellow Indian since the obvious question there is "what part of India are you from".
However, when talking to a Pakistani or American or Chinese one is an Indian first.

I know what you are saying, but he is here on a Pakistani forum and saying "he is not Indian but Sikh" so that is different from "yeah, he is Punjabi/Sikh".
