I heard an absurd story today. Girl goes into work first day, and she is told to contact secretary regarding Human Resources Paperwork, so that she can start getting paid.
Later in the day, after talking to the secretary, the boss who hires the girl says that “We didn’t discuss money! I want you to volunteer part-time first…”
Which was not mentioned like ever before in prior conversations.
Is this common in the work environment - that people will try to distort your labor?
When I was visiting our San Jose office, I was told that a guy, fresh graduate with a EE masters, came in and begged to let him work for free for a month and afterwards they can talk 'money'.
Yeah, but that was upfront. I'm talking about a girl who has been told she's hired for the position and can work, and is asked to come in the next day and contact the secretary regarding pay...and then told she's not going to get paid...
I mean, that's odd, but then, I'm new to this whole work-field arena.
There is a different btwn looking for a way to get "your foot" in the door and volunteering and going for an interview and then being told you aren't going to get paid.
Personally, it sounds shady and not very nice. I would have second thoughts on working for omeone like this and a company that is ok with it.
Sounds like a bullcrap place to work. This is just tip of the iceberg. They probably need someone to work for a month with no pay and have no intentions of hiring her perm.
