Hi guys,
we got married in April 2006 in Karachi and had all our family around us-apart from our friends and family that are in the UK.
We were thinking of having a desi wedding inspired anniversary do at our home in England to celebrate our anniversary (I know it’s very overdue however a lot happend that stopped us from doing something like this).
So has anyone done something like this?
I was thinking mendhi inspired do-fairylights, those little diya lights (is that what they’re called?!), bowls with flower petals and floating candles…a nice big cake
and erm food.
Any ideas anyone?
Alliyah
PS, apologies for sticking this under weddings however this was the nearest category to what I was looking for.
Re: Not a wedding-we're marking our wedding!
yay for parties and congratulations!! :)
your ideas for decor sound lovely. i always associate mehendis with chundri fabric- maybe try to incorporate that into things somehow? or mirrors in lovely carved wooden frames? you could set your candles and petals on those.
Thank you! I shall have to look around for some desi items. We live in a part of the UK where we can never find any desi items!
Any ideas on the food front? Should we opt for desi canapes (e.g. small kebabs etc) or should we offer a full dinner?!
Oh decisions!
Re: Not a wedding-we're marking our wedding!
Sounds like a fabulous idea!!
Hmm.. food. If you don't want to do a full-on dinner, you could do mini versions of desi food. Yes, small kebabs, tiny rolls (chicken/veggie), small samosaaz etc. It'd be all desi and you'd save a little time and energy.
You could use some desi fabric and drape it over your existing couches and use bangles as part of your decor too..
Good luck!
Tell us how it was!
Yeah was thinking of placing small votive candles amongst some bangles. Will be decorating small votive candles with mendhi (brushed with varnish to help them not dry out).
I know its our anniversary but would we be expected to give presents to others?! Like those goodie bags that are all the rage and you get given them as fancy frock do's?!
I've had a brainwave-will make dahi baray and possibly aloo chaat and will put them into small cups for bitesize portions. I'm getting so excited and it's like months away!!
I have to plan everything way in advance (well as much as I can) or else I forget stuff and it never goes to plan.
Re: Not a wedding-we're marking our wedding!
if u want it to be a dinner u could just keep it limited to like biryani, qorma, kebabs n salad n u will get a chance to wear ur wedding dress tooooo have mehendi/shadi type music
Re: Not a wedding-we're marking our wedding!
Gosh that sounds sooooo awesome! wish i cud do that but noone in my fam wud ever go for it...srry newayz best of luck n let us know how it turns out..
Re: Not a wedding-we're marking our wedding!
Hi Sara,
my family are only going for it cos its an excuse for a party!
Why would your family not go for it?
Re: Not a wedding-we're marking our wedding!
Princess that sounds like an awesome idea!
For our five year anniversary, I was thinking of doing the same thing and we would dress up in our wedding attire like we did on the day of the baraat and take pics and all that good stuff.
sigh how fast time flies its so much fun getting married! I always tell my hubby I want to get married all over again (to the same guy of course!)
@desigirl-hehehe yeah getting married to the same guy again sounds cool.
We had originally thought about doing something like this for our 5th anniversary however our family has gone through a rough patch (we lost our Nani last year which left everyone not only mourning but in shock). Other family stuff has gone downhill so it seems this is the only thing we can celebrate to cheer up everyone.
We kept our first anniversary celebration to just close family. So next year inshallah will be a first.
My aunt eloped like 10 years ago and we've been trying to get her to hold a party ever since...but she won't!!!
Re: Not a wedding-we're marking our wedding!
^ wow why not?
Re: Not a wedding-we're marking our wedding!
@ desigirl,
dunno sister, it is a shame really. It is such a beautiful thing to celebrate.
Inshallah I will post photos up of the decor/food etc obviously after the event :)
In the meantime I'm planning planning planning.
Re: Not a wedding-we're marking our wedding!
Yes do post pics. And planning is probably the most entertaining yet draining part about the wedding but time will fly!
