Northern Ireland police arrest man and woman over Omagh bombing

Very encouraging news. Hopefully we will start to finally to see some justice for the survivors and the families of those killed by this terrible act of terrorism perpetrated by Irish terrorists.

Northern Ireland police arrest man and woman over Omagh bombing

Northern Ireland police said they had arrested a man and a woman in connection with the 1998 Omagh bombing, the British province’s worst paramilitary atrocity. The unnamed pair were detained in the district of south Armagh, on the Irish border, after a major security operation that involved troops and police, police said late Tuesday.

The Real IRA, a dissident Roman Catholic paramilitary group which is opposed to the Northern Ireland peace process, claimed responsibility for the attack in Omagh on August 15, 1998, which left 29 people dead and injured hundreds more. The car bomb went off on a Saturday afternoon in the centre of Omagh, a town in the northwest of the province, at a time when it was packed with shoppers and visitors.

“We have been waiting five years for this. We are delighted things are starting to move forward,” said Omagh victims’ spokesman Michael Gallagher who lost his 21-year-old son Aiden in the atrocity. “It’s early days yet, we don’t know if they will be charged but obviously the police felt they had sufficient evidence which was strong enough to arrest these individuals,” Gallagher said. Police have arrested more than 80 people in connection with the attack but all have been released without charge because of lack of evidence. Only one man, Colm Murphy, was convicted last year on conspiracy charges related to the incident. No one has been charged with murder over the bombing. “You have got to remember that after the bombing there were a lot of arrests. It is charges, charges and prosecutions (that count),” Jason McCue, a lawyer representing Omagh bomb victims and their families, said after Tuesday’s arrests.

As one of the victims' father stated, they have waited five years for this. At least it's a small step in the right direction.
