North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

This is just ridiculous, someone put some sense into their heads, they are putting their kids live at risk.
if they stick to their stupid argument, polio will never be eradicated from Pakistan

MIRANSHAH: Tribesmen endorsed a Taliban ban on polio vaccinations](http://tribune.com.pk/story/409257/anti-polio-drive-suspended-campaign-puts-350000-children-at-risk/) Wednesday, closing the door to the prospect of any child being vaccinated in North Waziristan as part of a nationwide campaign.
Officials had pinned their last hopes of inoculating children in the northwestern district on talks with tribesmen, which were successively delayed until Wednesday, the last day of the nationwide campaign.

“Polio vaccination will be banned until drone attacks are stopped,” tribal elder Qadir Khan told a gathering of more than 200 elders and Islamic scholars in Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan.

“Drones martyr so many children, while polio afflicts one or two out of hundreds of thousands,” said tribal elder Maamoor Khan.
North Waziristan administrator Siraj Ahmed Khan said he had sought to convince the tribesmen to accept the vaccinations for the disease, which leaves children crippled for life.

“Polio is rampant in tribal areas and government desires to prevent its spread,” Khan told the meeting.
The polio battle exemplifies the government’s limited writ over the tribal belt.
Hafiz Gul Bahadur, whose followers are fighting Western troops in Afghanistan, and the Pakistani Taliban banned vaccinations in North and South Waziristan, risking the health of 240,000 children.

They demanded an end to US drone strikes and condemned the campaign as a cover for espionage. A Pakistani doctor was jailed in May after helping the CIA find Osama bin Laden using a hepatitis vaccination programme.
Officials said that a further 110,000 children in the tribal district of Khyber also risked going without the vaccine, because of fighting between government troops and Mangal Bagh.

The prime minister’s office told AFP that the campaign would be extended until Thursday and Friday in the rest of Pakistan, but said there had been “no change” on the situation in Waziristan.
The highly infectious disease affects mainly the under-fives and can cause paralysis in a matter of hours. Some cases can be fatal.
The Lancet medical journal has said vaccination problems last year led to Pakistan’s highest number of polio cases in a decade, 198, compared to 144 in 2010.

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

Its fear. Nothing else.

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

We should thank Dr. Afridi for that!!!

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

^ but they have been opposing these shots even before Afridi, claiming that these vaccinations make them 'naa-mard'.... I thinks.

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

yeah, Dr. Afridi ghost is going to haunt for years to come:(

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

they have completely lost it then… this is what happens when there is lack of education and awareness of such things:smack:

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

^ these rumors were rife at one stage in supposedly educated cities like Lahore too.

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

strange, I dont recall reading about this:hmmm:

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

Such a sorry state of affairs. Has it ever happened anywhere else in the world? Why it should always be Pakisatn making headlines for all the wrong reasons?

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

true! just a small section of society tarnishes Pakistan image every other day.

Pakistan is in the same category as Nigeria and Afghanistan where polio is still not eradicated. really sad :(

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

Aside from this topic, have you not learned bhai sahab, it boils down to what media picks and chooses to spread on mass level!

People fear of new treatments or injections even in very highly educated countries or localities. Let alone those who either have lack of education or have skepticism due to 'chemical' supplied from "foreign country".

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

I agree…media shows what they want people to see..media propaganda is going on for years…but i guess isnt our job to not buy everything media tells us…one must analyze the story and go with facts..just looking at news sources..its easy to tell where its coming from and why is it on their front page. how many times we have witnessed western media potraying Pakistan in a positive light?? and to non Pakistanis it just gives the impression nothing good is happening on ground. That Pakistan is a war zone and crazy suicide bombers and mullahs live there.and then without using common sense people tend to believe all this…these guys who are always making news are not even 1 percent do not represent 180 million Pakistanis:smack:

Re: North Waziristan tribes endorse Taliban ban on polio vaccination

Just imagine what will happen if these guys actually came to power. Where does the funding come from for the Taliban, who is it who want them to come to power? The people behind the scenes who control the Taleban are the real enemy.
