i dont like noor jahan's voice at all....its not surelee at all rather its too karari like phatta hua baans.

having said that i do like couple of songs by her like

main tere sang kaise chaloon
tera bina rogi hue feat Nusrat fateh ali khan
mudeya duppatta chad mera
aye watan ke sajeele jawanon
woh khwaab suhana toot gaya
roshan meri ankhon main wafa ke diye hain

but again i like these songs coz the composition and music is good.

she surely isnot malika-e-tarranum...but she represented pakistan in a good way since a lot of ppl outside pak adore her and love her like in india...and that makes me proud.

^ I think you would have liked her young voice when it was actually 'surilee' only if she could have maintained that like Lata Mangeshkar did until recently.

well i cant comment on that if you are on about her back and white days. will have to hear some songs of that era

Ps. i dont like lataz voice. now its tooo squeaky. it was good in black-white days...became okiesh in 60s/70s/80s. overall dont find her vc appealing at all. :)

It wouldnt be fair to say her voice isnt surilee. Just say then that it isnt as per your taste.

when i said it isnot sureeli it was very obvious that i expressed MY views...i didnot say that everyone thinks that her vc isnot sureeli (they find her vc good or bad their choice) :)

woh cheez achi hai kyon tumhe achi lagti hai that doesnot mean everyone else should like it too or they cant express their views. :)

I never really liked her voice. I do respect her and I can understand why she was so amazing to the earlier generations, she was very inspirational in the war of 1965 (according to my dad) and is a hero (heroine?) of the country. The thing about Noor Jehan is that her songs had real substance as opposed to most of the crap served out nowadays.

Its just that the old songs of Noor Jahan, Mehdi Hassan type don't appeal to me at all, just not my taste. IMO Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is a greater legend, he was just brilliant.

aray yaar tou maine originally kya kaha tha yehi na ke "i dont like noor jahan's voice at all".

aise tou i can also say "it is unfair to call her mallika-e-tarranum when she doesnot have a great voice"....baat bas apni apni pasand ki hai. :)

indeed it is...it was later done by her daughter/or someone who looks like her....about 3/4 yrs back....i think that was good too...dobara sunna pare ga...let me find the video and then i'll post it here.

Points to note:

  • NJ’s voice did change a lot over 50 years’ span
  • It deteriorated in the 70s when it sounded really harsh and rather annoying.
  • It improved a lot in the 80s.
  • Her voice deteriorated because of the kinds of songs that Pak films contained, requiring very high notes, causing damage to vocal chords.
  • Her voice quality and range was amazing in the 80’s. I found it very soothing and sensuous.
  • Surila means having sur of which NJ was the queen. Baareek awaz has to do with voice quality.
  • In the Western part of the sub-continent, female voices are mostly heavy such as Naheed Akhtar ( who also has an amazing booming voice ) etc.
  • Bareek awaz for females singers is considered more attractive and that is why Indian female singers sound so sweet and are popular with Pakistanis particularly. This also has to do with melody-heavy tunes and better arrangement and orchestration. However, as somebody noted, Lata sounded very sweet in her early career but too squeaky during other parts of her career and quite horrible in the 90s.
  • However, if you notice all famous Western female singers have heavy voices.
  • Some of the very good songs of NJ’s later career are however R-rated Punjabi numbers. But they are very energetic, rhythmic and fun to listen to and force your body to move in ecstasy. They are a 'khazaana' waitng to be explored since her songs number in the thousands.
  • I was listening to my collection recently and these two songs were awesome – “Na Rai Vakh Methoon, Main Pyar Laina Tethoon, Gora Chitta Pinda Mera”, and “Nachdi Di Gut Khul Gai, Ve Chariyan Di Niyat Buri”. And these are on the mild side of the R-rated, BTW.

wat's the meaning of this song? it has always intrigued me. is the singer talking abt her first love? and how she perhaps cant love the same way again?! hmmm.

i've heard she was pretty popular with the generals -- was also photographed holding hands with some tharkee military dictator in the 70s. I think she actually brought much disrepute to singing and as patriotic as I would like to be, I can't stand the stuff she sang and when I see her singing in her videos all the overfed superlazy desi aunties I've seen come to my mind...and those layers and layers of body paint...oh well....
