Noon Meem Rashid......for BholiBhali :-)

Bholi Jee, tasleemaat!

aap ki farmaish karda nazm ke saath hazir e khidmat hoon aur iss takheer ke liay m’aazrat’khwa bi hoon lekin typing is not one of my favorite tasks these days–Lazy me:)

Anyways back to the poem you asked for. The title of the poem is Mukafaat–meaning retaliation or recompense. The poem belongs to the early poetic period of Rashid and was added in his first published collection Maavra. Like most of his early poetry–and as all of his fans know that its his most favorite subject matter–the poem revolves around the theme of sex. It is written in first singular person but lets assume that its not poet talking about himself and is just a dramatic lyric; the protagonist or the narrator or the poet himself–whoever this first singular person is-- is telling his readership how he has spent all his life in taqadus repressing and killing all his desires for the sake of God he believed in and how in the end all those buried and eroded desires has come back to haunt him. His life is a misery now and he is regreting that why he has wasted his life or lets say his jawani

sniff

The pivotal point of the poem is its very end where he is deducing that had he embraced gunnah in his jawaani and not killed his desires, his life wouldn’t have been so miserable. This is something you’ll notice again n again in his poetry if you ever decided to explore him n his work more. Its not just the sex his poetry is revolving around and around, he goes a step further. He is using it as a mode of escape from the harsh realities of life; and not only a mode of escape it is also his sentimental revolt against God and his moral code…as he says in Raqs…

“ay meri ham’raqs mujh ko thaam le
zindagi se bhaag ke aaya hoon mein
dar se larzaan hoon ke kahin aisa na ho
raqs’gah ke chor dervaazay se aa ker zindagi
doondh le mujh ko, nishaan paa le mera
aur jurm e aish kerte dekh le
…”

and in Gunnah and Mrs. Salamaanka look at his rebellous tone…

“yeh be’bassi mere khudda’wand ki hei”

“Khudda ke siva hei kon pak damaaN”

And his poetry is full of this kinda material…his helplessness infront of temptation, his seeking refuge in the life of gunnah and his rejection of moral values and relevance of god n religion.

But the important thing is not to assume like many out there that it was his bold and daring thought and imagery and his rejection of accepted norms and values and god and religion which bought him all this fame and recoginition.
It is his unique and original style, his artistic use of vocabulary, his unrhyming yet musical lyrics, his fresh imagery which amazes his readership and makes him stand higher among other progressive poets of urdu poetry.

He was unique, original and fresh!!
And AWESOME!!!

Mukafaat

Rahi hei hazrat e yazdaaN se dosti meri
Raha hei zuhd se yaarana istavaar mera
Guzar gayee hei taqadus mein zindagi meri
Dil ahrman se raha hei sateezakaar mera
Kisi pe rooh numaayaaN na ho saki meri
Raha hei apni umangooN pe ikhtiyaar mera

Dabaaye rakha hei seenay mein apni aahoon ko
Wahin diya hei shab o roz paech o taab unhein
Zabaan e shauq banaya nahin nigahoon ko
Kiya nahin kabhi wehshat mein bay’niqaab unhein
Khayaal hi mein kiya pervarish gunahoon ko
Kabhi kiya na jawani se behrayaab unhein
Yeh mil rahi hei mere zabt ki saza mujh ko
Ke ik zehr se labraiz hei shabaab mera
Azeeyutoon se bhari hei her ik baydaari
Muheeb o roohsataaN hei her ik khawaab mera
Fishaar e zabt se baytaab hei rubaab mera
Magar yeh zabt mere qehqahoon ka dushman tha
Pyaam e marg e jawaani tha ijtanaab mera

Lo aa gayee hein wo ban ker muheeb tasveerein
Wo aarzoo’ein ke jin ka kiya tha khooN mein ne
Lo aa gaye hein wohi paervaan e ahrman
Ay kaash chhup ke kahin ik gunah ker leta
hilawatoon se jawani ko apni bhar leta
gunnah eik bi ab tak kiya na kyoon mein ne?

sigh

Here is some more Rashid. I am posting the very first poem I read by him and it was this poem(along with Mrs. Salaamaanka) which made me dig him more. This is a satirical poem and the beauty of this poem lies in poet’s wit. He is recalling a night from his memory where he made love to this angrez woman--and its pretty obvious that he not only had a great time in da past, he still is deriving pleasure from the sweet memory --but instead of admitting it he is saying that whatever he did that night was not for his own pleasure . It was just a revenge from angrzi qaum and he did it for his ppl…....

Intaqaam

Uss ka chehra, uss ke khad o khaal yaad aatay nahin
Ik shabistaaN yaad hei
Eik barhanna jism aatishdaaN ke paas
Farsh per qaleen, qaleenooN pe sej
Dhaat aur pathar ke buut
Gosha e divaar mein hunstay hovay!
Aur aatishdaaN mein angaarooN ka shor
Unn buutooN ke bayhissi per khashmageeN?
Ujjli ujjli oonchi devarooN pe aks
Unn farangi hakimooN ki yaadgaar
Jin ki talwarooN ne rakha tha yahaN
Sang e buniyaad e farang!

Uss ka chehra uss ke khad o khaal yaad aatay nahiN
Ik barhanna jism ab tak yaad hei
Ajnabi aurat ka jism
Mere hoontooN ne liya tha raat bhar
Jis se arbaab e watan ki baybasi ka intaqaam
Wo barhanna jism ab tak yaad hei!

how cute!

hmmmm...Naiku that's an interesting one!

*Mere hoontooN ne liya tha raat bhar

Not bad of an excuse....which reminds me I've got some retaliation to do too ;-)

I like noon meem's style. Can I dig him too?

BoSS, forget retaliation and go for the sweet revenge--like Rashid ofcourse.
