That’s precisely because culture* is* at fault here, religion is being abused, and the legal systems in Muslim countries are complicit to boot. The “hypocritical Western media” doesn’t have much to do when those who carry out honor killings cite the cultural and/or religious basis for their actions themselves. In many societies, punishment/death is a justified consequence for ‘disobedience,’ ‘dishonor,’ or ‘lewdness,’ primarily on the part of women. To complicate matters, religious meanings attached to terms like ‘chastity’ or ‘virginity’ further reinforce social and cultural traditions that treat women as property. The motivation often goes beyond protecting an individual’s honor, to protecting the community at large and Islam.
I think it’s time we shed the collective victim complex and come to terms with our dirty laundry.
