Does anyone know any non alcoholic perfumes in America and its hard to find a real nice itaar here in america. i know dubai, middle eastern countries have varitey of choices of non alcoholic perfumes but not here in america.
Re: Non-Alcoholic Perfume
I heard it's not haram to use alcoholic perfumes as long as it is not grain derived alcohol (if that is your main concern). i guess if you go to places with a large muslim population like michigan or chicago you would find shops that sell islamic books, incense and itar. or check halal meat stores, i'm sure they sell it but the quality probably would not be great. your best bet is michigan or chicago, or just ask someone to bring it if they go on hajj or umrah.
Re: Non-Alcoholic Perfume
I majored in Chem and what is called alcohol in perfumes is not like 'SHARAB' type of alcohol. In English, anything with an -OH group on it is called alcohol. If you use this definition, then nearly every cosmetic product would be haram.
For example,
-cetyl alcohol is a type of hair conditioner. It doesn't mean sharab.
-isopropyl alcohol is in hand sanitizer. But nobody gets drunk off of Purell, right? it's not an intoxicant.
-even our own bellies make alcohol everyday in the digestive tract!
It's confusing because we immediately think alcohol=haram but it's only one type of alcohol which is (ethyl alcohol aka ethanol). The other types are not really what we think of alcohol, they are not intoxicants.
Re: Non-Alcoholic Perfume

exactly...the type of alcohol used in cosmetics/shampoos..and perfumes is not the same as the one people get drunk on..
ethanol is the only one that brings intoxication. Although fragrances are made using non-ethanol alcohols, sometimes the small amount of concentrated perfume is diluted in ethanol, because perfumes are oils and therefore don't dissolve well in water. However, sometimes they use methanol instead of ethanol...Its getting too scientific now, but regardless, i believe I read in an islamic journal that as long as the ethanol is not derived from fermenting grain, its ok to use that perfume, even if it;s suspended in alcohol.
Ahh jalebi- brings me back memories of orgo lab :)
