I have been given an assignment for marketing to do Swot analysis on nokia, I have done streghnths, weaknesses and Opputunities so far…I am stuck with threats… Has anyone done it before ?
I am in to telecom Arena and handled major companies.Samsung(I was one of its first channel managers back in early 2000's),Alcatel,Philips,LG and others....
Your question depends on the market conditions. Threats need not be your compeititors as a whole but it can also be related with the regions a particular product is going to be launched, its distribution and retail geogrophy,The number of retailers available,The possibility of finding a potential distributor, the ambit of launching a product in a chosen market, the coverage, the providers available etc etc......
I do not know how your brand operates in England(I am assuming that you are in England from your `location' ).But I have an experience of more than ten years in this field and have worked in Far East Asia(Indonesia, vietnam and others) and India and my reply is based on my experience and my modus ope*****.
Again ,at some places you will have to gauge other factors like local taxes etc.For example way back in 2001 ,there had been no common Tax structure was in place in India and each state had its own tax structures. For example if the state Delhi used to collect 4% on every handset billed, another state called Kerala used to bill the same product at 14.5% !!!,so obviously Telecom products bought in Kerala were costlier compared to many other states. What could be the negative side of this? Grey proudcts were being dumped in to that market.(That too in a state where atleast one member from each family will be abroad and people have easy access to all products available in any of the international market). Then in 2003 a collective and concerted efforts from handset companies were made and made repeated requests to the government of Kerala to get taxes reduced.I was a part of the first delegation that met the then Chief Minister and Finance Minister of Kerala.
I was explaining all these ,just to give you a light on prevailing conditions when you undertake SWOT analysis.
I was going to suggest that regulation plays an important role in the telecom sector, and Arleitter has highlighted some important aspects of this :k:
When doing a SWOT Analysis, it often helps to think in terms of Porter’s 5 Forces:
Threat of Substitutes:
e.g. A myriad of mobile technology products that offer similar functionality to cell phones - e.g. laptops, handhelds, hybrid music/game devices that allow end-users to communicate via VoIP.
Threat of New Market Entrants:
Although the barriers to entry in the mobile manufacturing sector are pretty high, Google’s recent co-br-anding partnership with HTC shows how players like Nokia are susceptible to competition from alliances among businesses that may be occupying different positions in the telecom value chain.
Bargaining Power of Buyers:
e.g. there’s increasing threat in terms of buyers having more power over buyers by virtue of more channels of information and transactions available over the Internet. People can engage with various infomediaries and e-marketplaces which cuts into the sales of Nokia’s authorized sales channels.
Bargaining Power of Suppliers:
e.g. we’re already noticing “apps” and software driving sales of handhelds like the iPhone and Android. So, if Nokia doesn’t have a critical mass of these apps from developers or doesn’t formulate effective partnerships and agreements with them, it may have negative long-term effects for them.
Overall Industry Rivalry:
Based on the four forces highlighted above, and points mentioned by others, the overall industry rivalry is pretty high.
^ You are a star--Thank you ever so much guys, I guess from next time I should put up whole assignment here and the way all of you are so helpful my assignment will be done within hours :D
I wouldn’t take a chance. GS is very well indexed on google. Chance are that if you’re submitting an electronic version of your assignment, then it can be easily scanned by plagiarism apps.
Besides, I simply gave you some points to think about/expand on… use it as a framework to shape your arguments
Can you please please edit that post of yours? I obviously have expanded the points you mentioned amended according to rest of my work but I just dont wana tke no chance, you knw what I mean
From next Time I am gona pm everyone
