Hypothetically speaking, lets say there was no more USPS. No more mail deliveries or package deliveries at super low rates. No mail box to check. Instead you’d have to rely on internet based communication, or use the private alternative like UPS/FedEx.
With that in mind, what impact if any will this have on your personal/business lives?
This question may matter come next year, as yahoo’s featured piece is on this very issue today. USPS may cease to exist if alternative solutions are not sought to either restructure it, or fund it. Cause being that physical mail volume has dropped about 20% and will continue to decline as more of us use email/sms to communicate.
USPS provides a little over a half million jobs in the U.S. For an entity that big to just vanish could be devastating for an already ailing economy.
I for one, would like to see USPS survive. Even if as a relic of the traditional past, but it provides competitive rates for shipping packages in the same amount of time as other carriers.
My solution: Reduce mail delivery. Do not deliver on Saturdays. Have half days on Friday. This may not reduce costs of operating by a whole lot, but it should allow to reduce costs of labor significantly.
