I hope what I write doesn't offend anyone. I know I'm taking a chance even putting this out here, but I'm a curious person and always in the know. Ok, so here goes, one of my friends is Pakistani. She's a nice person. We have interesting conversations and so forth, but I was wondering why she wanted to be my friend. The first time we spoke she asked what my surname was. I didn't think much of it at the time when I responded, but then I started to wonder. Why did she want to know? We continued to speak taking turns asking questions,with her asking more than answering. We hit it off and became instant friends. I've been wanting to ask her for a while now Why she wanted to know my surname but thought it would just be to awkward and weird. So, I wanted to know is asking a potential friend's surname like Traditional introduction? Is that how you form a friendship? Is my surname important? Am I being judged from that? Is that the only reason she wanted to be my friend? I hope no one takes offense to my statement. I'm just a curious person with a penetrating mind.

dont know if someone else said that already, but asking for a surname is not unique. It maybe that she already knows of someone with the same first name who lives in your area and has about the same demographics as yours. She probably just wanted to confirm if you are the same person or not.
So if I come across a Arshad from Queens, NY who is from Karachi Pakistan and I know that a friend of my wife has a brother who lives in Queens and his name is Arshad too, I might ask the former Arshad of his last name, No big deal.

I think people might ask at times to find out if you're Muslim or maybe your ethnicity if they're not sure of it.
