No offence meant but can’t let Modi in - Another rejection for Modi

Re: America denies visa to Gujarat CM Modi

Or consider this, the Muslim pop of the US is estimated at 6 million (state dept, CAIR and Cornell Uni study), the Hindu pop at 1.25 m (upper estimate)-thus it makes political sense to chase a larger potential electoral bloc.

As for Mushy, well, he is the leader of the nation, and has not on his hands the lives of 1000 innocents.

Group sets fire to warehouse in India

RUPAK SANYAL

Associated Press

AHMADABAD, India - Hindu nationalists set fire to a PepsiCo warehouse in western India on Saturday to protest the U.S. denial of a visa for a top state official due to his role in religious riots in 2002.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked the U.S. government to urgently reconsider its decision. The State Department said Friday it had denied a diplomatic visa to the Hindu nationalist chief minister of Gujarat state, Narendra Modi, and revoked his existing tourist/business visa under the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act that bars people responsible for violations of religious freedom from getting a visa.Nearly 150 activists barged into the warehouse of U.S.-based PepsiCo in the western city of Surat, smashed bottles and set fire to the place, said Dharmesh Joshi, a witness. Police confirmed the attack.

The warehouse was partially burned. The demonstrators were from the Bajrang Dal, a group affiliated with Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, which governs Gujarat state. The State Department had no immediate comment, spokesman Noel Clay said Saturday in Washington.A witness said about a dozen workers at the warehouse fled during the attack and firefighters doused the flames. The protesters also ransacked a nearby PepsiCo office and demonstrated outside the American consulate in Bombay. PepsiCo representatives could not be reached for comment. Some carried placards reading: "Down with the United States," "Boycott the U.S. goods and the Americans."

The attacks came despite a tightening of security in western India where Hindu nationalists have a strong presence, to prevent retaliation to the U.S. decision. The State Department said Modi was denied a visa in response to a finding by India's National Human Rights Commission that held his state government responsible for the 2002 Hindu-Muslim violence in the state, India's worst in a decade.Human rights groups have accused the state government of doing little to stop the violence that killed 1,000 people, most of them Muslims.Up to 150 Bajrang Dal activists also tried to enter the U.S. visa application center in Ahmadabad, the main Gujarat city but were turned back by police. The Indian prime minister said the U.S. government had been clearly told of his nation's concern at the visa denial.

"We have also called for the urgent reconsideration of decision by the U.S. government," Singh said in a statement in India's parliament. The decision, he said, showed a lack of sensitivity and courtesy to an elected authority.Modi, who had been scheduled to address an association of motel owners in New York and to meet with Indians living in several U.S. cities, has called the decision an insult to India. In Ahmadabad, Suleiman Shaikh, a Muslim who had lost his wife and two children in the 2002 rioting, welcomed the decision."While the Indian judiciary system is yet to prosecute Modi and his men responsible for the killing of innocent Muslims, the U.S. decision comes as an indication of how Modi was being dealt with internationally," Shaikh told The Associated Press.

Re: America denies visa to Gujarat CM Modi

Sheraz, the popularity of Modi is because he is a very good leader in the sense that he has transformed Gujarat economically and is on the way of making it the California of India. LBG, did not Musharraf mastermind Kargil, then you can say that he was behind more than a 1000 humans death. Atleast Modi did not plan the riot, all the accusations against Modi are of bringing in the army after two days to quell the riots, which was at the Indo-Pak border, due to the post December 13 tensions, at that time.

Police today foiled Bajrang Dal members' attempt to storm US Visa Application Centre premises here during a demonstration to protest America's denial of visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.Bajrang Dal members, led by state president Ranchodbhai Bharwad, tried to enter the premises of the building which houses the visa centre.Prevented from entering the premises as police had cordoned off the area and closed the gate, the activists carrying black flags, banners and placards tried to stop traffic on the Ashram Road in front of the visa centre. They climbed on bus roofs, shouted slogans and prevented motorists from plying on the road. They also vandalised the visa centre's sign board and broke soft-drink bottles.

"We demand ouster of all those NGOs who have been running a campaign to malign the name of Gujarat," Bharwad later told reporters.Bajrang Dal will see to it that these NGOs leave the state, he added. He said his organisation would take the matter to each and every village in the state.Bajrang Dal members also asked all Gujaratis to shun American goods and claimed that Christian missionaries were behind the US visa denial.

US assessing India's request on Modi visa issue
NEW DELHI, MAR 19 (PTI)
US is assessing India's request for reconsideration of the decision to deny visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, American Embassy said here today."The request of the Government of India for review of decision on denial of visa to Modi has been forwarded to the State Department. It is being assessed," Embassy spokesman David Kennedy told PTI.

He said the State Department will give a formal reply to the Indian government after assessing the request but refused the estimate how much time it would take. The US yesterday revoked Modi's tourist/business visa and denied him diplomatic visa apparently over the Gujarat riots. Modi was scheduled to make a five-day visit to U S from Sunday.

Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran subsequently summoned Deputy Head of US Mission Robert Blake and sought "urgent reconsideration" of the decision. He also conveyed India's "concern and regret" over the decision.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also took serious objection to Washington's decision, describing it as not "appropriate".

Re: America denies visa to Gujarat CM Modi

PM takes strong exception to US denial of visa to Modi
NEW DELHI, MAR 19 (PTI)
Taking strong exception to the US denial of visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said it was not "appropriate" to use allegations to make a "subjective judgement" to question the constitutional authority in India."We respect the sovereign right to grant or refuse visa to any person. We do not believe that it is appropriate to use allegations or anything less than due legal process to make a subjective judgement to question a constituional authority in India," Singh told the Rajya Sabha.

The Prime Minister's response came after Leader of Opposition Jaswant Singh said that the ground on which Modi was denied visa was totally unacceptable. The US has said that its decision to deny diplomatic visa to and provoke tourist/business visa of Modi was based on findings by the National Human Rights Commission that his state government "failed" to control "persistent violations of rights".

The Prime Minister said "we agree that this is not a matter of partisan politics, but rather a matter of concern over a point of principle. I think, the Government's prompt and firm response clearly shows our principled stand in this matter". Sharing the concern voiced by members from all sides in the House, the Prime Minister said "when I came to know of the denial of visa to Modi yesterday I immediately instructed our External Affairs Minister to call the US Ambassador and explain to them that we are greatly concerned and we greatly regret the decision that has been taken by the US government".

He said Government has taken note of the developments arising from the US decision and was also "greatly concerned" at the American action to revoke other categories of US visas already issued to the Gujarat Chief Minister. Singh informed the House that Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran had yesterday summoned the Deputy Chief of the US Mission Robert Blake to convey "strong demarche" on the decision of the US government.

"Our government has clearly pointed out our very deep concern and regret over the US decision to deny a visa to a constitutionally-elected Chief Minister of a State of our Union.Observing that the US government has been told of India's concern, the Prime Minister said "we have also called for the urgent reconsideration of this decision by the US government".

Raising the issue soon after the House met, Jaswant Singh voiced concern over the developments and said the External Affairs Ministry "stood boldly for India...That is the function of the Ministry of External Affairs. I will be failing if I do not acknowledge this fact." Maintaining that certain allegations contained in the letter of US Congresmen were "tendentious and totally false," he said that this was the first time that provisions under a specific US statute had been applied in Modi's case."It raises the question why the State Department has chosen India to apply it?" he asked.
