No Bollywood films for Oscars

**There will be no Indian films from the world’s largest film industry, Bollywood, at next year’s Oscars.
**

All the six films shortlisted as possible entrants for the awards have been rejected by the Film Federation of India (FFI).

The federation said they were too Westernised and did not reflect Indian culture.

The shortlisted films were Koi Mil Gaya, Gangajaal, Janantaram Mamanantaram (a film based on Gulliver’s Travels), Jhankar Beats (Musical Beats), Andaaz and Jogger’s Park.

‘Not Indian enough’

FFI chairman Harmesh Malhotra was particularly critical of one of the new releases, Jogger’s Park, which was half in English.

He told the BBC the other films seemed like remakes of English movies.

Mr Malhotra admitted many of them were good films and commercially successful.

But, according to him, the main criterion for Indian films being shortlisted for Oscars is that they should sound and look Indian.

He gave the example of Lagaan, a crossover film nominated for the Oscars last year.

Mr Malhotra regretted that the films were now increasingly portraying only the Westernised section of Indian society.

Bengali films and films from the four southern Indian states also failed to produce a single movie which could be shortlisted for the Oscars.

India produces more than 800 Hindi-language movies a year and its film industry has an estimated annual turnover of 60 billion rupees ($1.3 bn). It employs nearly six million people.

Thats a curious thought process. On the other hand, a couple of days ago I was talking to an Indian fellow who is from Chennai... and he told me that Tamil movies are generally better produced, more successful and much refined compared to stuff produced in Mumbai. Surprising, that no Tamil movie was able to make the cut, even at FFI level.

finally no crap in oscars

tamil movies are more like regional movies and they obviously can't compete with bollywood when it comes to world fame. however, your friend is right that tamil movies are better than bollywood. my old roommate was a tamil and we used to watch tamil movies. those were old 80s and early 90s movies. but things have changed now and new tamil movies are just as much westernized as bollywood movies. yes they still have better stories, songs, music, productions but still in the end they too are in for making money and for now western style is in so everyone is following it. they are no exception :)

Southern movies

The other well known regional language movies are from Kerala and Bengal. Movies in Malayalam (from Kerala) are well known for their creativity and originality, unfortunately since the language is popular only in the South it usually does not get the recognition it deserves.

Priyadarsan director of (Hungama and Hera Pheri) is a popular Kerala Director, in fact the above mentioned movies were remakes from mALAYALAM.

Unfortunatley, it is difficult to hit popular recognition unless the movie is made in Hindi......,.

To win an oscar the movie would have to be Indian in theme, social in context, and western in treatment: which means 2 hrs long, no songs and top notch acting. Personally I think Teen Deewarein would have been a better choice than all other 6 which got rejected. Or Mr and Mrs Iyer.

a 2 hour long(only two hours!!) indian movie with NO songs AND good acting:eek:
yea like thats ever gonna happen

^ It's been happening(on a smaller scale though).. you just havn't noticed it yet. Karina has mentioned 2 very good examples Teen Deewarain and Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. Then there have been many others in the past.

oh i didnt know, i havent seen the films that karina mentioned, hmmm, i guess i'll keep my eyes open for them , thanx :)

Dont make such sweeping statements. I have seen hundreds of Tamil movies that are nothing but soft porn movies with fat actors/actresses gyrating their butts and running around trees to raunchy songs, mouthing mundane dialogues( yeah there was a period when I had nothing better to do and I was stranded in the South).
Your statement seems to be a case of supporting the underdog....but the fact is that "in general" Bombay Movies are technically and visually better than movies from the South. And there have been as many, if not more , movies with great storyline and direction from Bombay as from the South.

(Notice that I did not use the term "bollywood" as I consider it derogatory and equivalent to trashing the Bombay Film Industry as a cheap copy cat of Hollywood which it is not. Remember that for every Anu Malik , there is a Gulzar)

gangajaal? i just saw it the other night and it was one pathetic movie..andaaz was pretty bad as well..i dont know bout the other 4

i dont think they made any good movie after lagaan to be honest with you
