KARACHI: Govt names Nishtar Park bomber

By Our Staff Reporter
KARACHI, June 15: The Sindh Home Department on Friday issued a statement claiming to have identified the terrorist network behind the 2006 Nishtar Park bombing, which took place on 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal (11 April, 2006).

The suicide bomber is identified as Mohammad Siddiq, son of Isreal, from Seri Karnashi village in district Mansehra, NWFP. He is said to have had links with the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi.

According to the official statement, the network is based in Darra Adam Khel and is led by Amanullah, alias Mufti Ilyas. Other members of the group include Qari Abid Iqbal Mehsood, Mohammad Khalid Khan alias Abrar, Sultan alias Mehmood, Mufti Zakir and Rehmatullah.

Out of the six persons named, Sultan (Mehmood), is already in jail while Mufti Zakir and Rehmatullah have been arrested. The remaining three are still at large.

The statement says that this group has been involved in identifying, preparing and brainwashing people for suicide bombings to be carried out in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The leader Amanullah (Mufti) is said to be expert at making and using the explosive jackets used in such crimes.

Describing the preparations that led up to the Nishtar Park bombing, the statement said that “the group assembled at house no. 2, Islamia Colony, Pahari Wali Gali, Qasba Colony, Orangi on 11 Rabi-ul-Awwal.”

The next day, on 11 April, the bomber Siddiq “performed two Nawafil at the house of Rehmatullah and then prepared himself and wore explosive jacket having 7/8 kilogrammes explosive and 3,000 ball bearings specially designed for suicide bombing.” Subsequently the bomber, accompanied by Khalid Khan (Abrar) and Sultan (Mehmood) went towards Nishtar Park via M.A. Jinnah Road and joined a small rally headed there. As Maghrib prayers started, the statement continues, Khalid and Sultan slipped away. As soon as the prayer ended, Siddiq jumped towards the stage while detonating his explosives.

The Home Department’s statement says that “the motive of Lashkar-i-Jhangvi behind committing this offence was to create unrest and a law and order situation in Sindh in order to avenge the present government’s policy against religious extremism.”

Substantiating the evidence proving the bomber’s identity, the statement said that Siddiq’s parents, Mr Isreal and Mst Zewar Jan, are alive, as are his brothers Mohammed Shafi, Shafiqur Rahman and Mohammad Rafique and sisters Safia and Soba Jan. It adds that a DNA test was carried out at the Dr A.Q Khan Lab, using the bomber’s head and a sample of Mohammad Rafique’s blood. It turned up a positive result, showing that the two were brothers.

The statement claims that the group Siddiq belonged to was also involved in the 14 June, 2004, bomb blast in Orangi Town, an attempt on Allama Hasan Turabi’s life on 6 April, 2006, and Allama Turabi’s assassination on 14 July, 2006.

According to the statement, the Sindh Home Department has notified Rs10 million to solve this case, and “a summary in this regard shall be initiated in order to disburse the subject amount.”

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

i am happy that Pakistan is using technology to solve the crimes, but how can DNA test show that he performend Nawafil at so and so location with so and so person, as there is not mention if his accomplices have been captured.

While reading posted article, i felt like reading some fiction novel.

are they not sure about that he has connections with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi?
Have they made some arrests, which have revealed that they prayed nawafil etc..

how come they find out about his family? was there any ID card?

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

An elaborate talsm-e-hosharba scheme cooked up by the MQM goons in the gov't to deflect the actual culpabillity from themselves...hence the mentioned of not the individual but the idealogies, such as sunni deobandi that they despise so much...Just a few weeks before this blast sunni tehreek leadership had contacted various people in the gov't that MQM was threatening them, even Imran Khan was contacted and asked to help them...Secondly the manner in which sunni tehreek's injured workers were whacked in the hospitals on 12th May further leads to the only logical inference, i.e. MQM carried out the hit job that wiped out the whole sunni tehreek leadership...

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

The entire world knows that suicide bombing is the preferred method of your jihadi friends and your conspiracy theories may work with some brainwashed people, but not much beyond that. It is common for mullahs to tell their talibs to attack the opposing sect/group, this is just more of that. Deobandi-Barelvi fight is an old one.

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

You are right we should progress, develop nukes and drop em on civilians instead.

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

So now MQM has developed nuclear weapons? Or maybe nishtar park bombing was conducted by the west.

Tackling extremism

FRIDAY’S disclosure by the Sindh government that the man who blew himself up at the Sunni Tehrik’s religious gathering in Karachi’s Nishtar Park in April last year — killing 57 and injuring scores —belonged to a banned extremist group leaves one with cold feet. It is also a reminder that simply banning extremist groups and organisations will not make them disappear or their activities to stop. Police probe into the suicide bombing reveals that the group behind the dastardly act had planned the crime sitting hundreds of miles away in a Frontier town before executing it in Karachi. The motive given out by arrested accomplices involved in the massacre was sectarian intolerance. The killer belonged to a sub-sect of the puritan variety akin to one practised by the Taliban, which does not allow for any interpretation of religion at variance with its own. The target was a rival religious party whose top leadership and many activists were killed in the attack.

Unfortunately, there have been far too many suicide bombings and armed attacks carried out by indoctrinated men in recent years. All such murderous assaults have been prompted by hate and intolerance or by political animosities. The targets have often been well known personalities, including the president, the prime minister, the interior and other ministers, religious leaders, scholars, a former corps commander and, most recently in Quetta, soldiers of the Pakistan Army. All this leaves one to marvel at the consistent failure of the many intelligence agencies which have failed to preempt such strikes. The threat posed by religious extremism, whether home-grown or inspired by Al Qaeda, to society and public order cannot be more pronounced. The authorities’ inaction against elements that have openly indulged in spreading intolerance and threatening to enforce an extremist version of the faith, whether they be Islamabad’s Lal Masjid clerics or those behind the encroaching Talibanisation in parts of the Frontier province, has emboldened such anarchist forces to challenge the writ of the state. **It is time the government cracked down harder on such elements to put an end to this form of insanity in the name of Islam.

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

Do you post just the heck of it or is there some comprehesion issue? MQM retards wouldn't know nukes even if they were handed on a plate. Just stick to terrorism, collecting bhatta and killing innicent thats where you excel.

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

while I have very little doubt that the entire MO of this attack is signature Lashkar-e-Jhangvi/Sipah Sahaba what credibility does the Sindh govt have left? They showed that they abdicate a govts responsibilities to act on party orders coming from London. can they have any claim to objectivity now?

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

Loss of Govt credibility does not change the reality that this gruesome crime was committed by fanatical sectarians who have done this in the past and mind u will do it again in the future. Instead of talking about Mqm or Sindh Govt, can we stick with the real criminals, these terrorists have terrorized Pakistanis for many many years, its about time they are condemned and bought to justice.

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

Remind me again why you are brining the nuclear weapons dropped on Japan into this discussion? Did somebody in Nishtar park drop the bombs on Japan?

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

pakistan is turning odder than ever. what with mqm, shia sunni, suni suni? whats next?

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

pakistan is turning odder than ever. what with mqm, shia sunni, suni suni? whats next?

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

Since you are so concerned about uncivilized jihadi anmials killing with explosives don't you think your westren masters use a better more civilized means to kill in bulk? comprendae ????????

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

I agree, these criminals should be condemned and brought to justice. Unfortunately if your law enforcement forces are compromised by political interests then that becomes much more difficult.

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

:k: Che bhai.. The attack was strategically important for MQM- make the Pakistani intelligence weak so that they get busy on resolving Barelvi-Deobandi conflict and hunting for culprits rather than focussing on Bhattakhor and mobilekhor MQM goondas.

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

My western masters or yours? Your jihadis learned to make bombs due to CIA/ISI tag team. They would be nothing today if it were not for the CIA funding they received.

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

And in other other news, MQM has also taken over Waziristan and surrounding areas and is involved in beheadings and bombings. At least one good thing will come out of the Taliban takeover of Punjab. Your favourite heera mandi will finally be closed hopefully.

Re: Nishtar Park Bomber: LJ

I suspect its sunni-sunni conflict. Never forget brother, Iran and India are Pakistan two biggest enemies- Pakistan should shun all diplomatic ties with these two countries. Everyone knows that there was no Barelvi-Deobandi conflict before. There were problems with Shias-Sunnis but that was confined to cities around Lahore- Sargodha, Sialkot, Gujranwala and around Multan/Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur and some incidents in Karachi. I am from Punjab and I know the facts. The main reason behind Shia-Sunni conflicts was that Shias have more money and more arms and power plus support from Iran.
