I did not until I saw the following link appreciate that the list of select soldiers had expanded from the original 8 to 11
Re: Nishan-e-Haider
Yes this new addition is a misconception. Suddenly without any official news/notice some ppl and some reports started counting an 11th Nishan-i-Haider recipent, while the no. of NH recipents actually remains 10, with the last two being awarded in 1999 to Capt Karnal Sher Khan and Hav Lalak Jan of NLI.
Naik Asif Ali Janjua is a Hilal-i-Kashmir recipent, which was recently declared equivalent to the NH, but not NH itself. I've been trying to learn exactly how/why/when Hilal-i-Kashmir was declared equal to NH and why & when he was given HK, and why not the NH in the first place earlier on. This may have smthng to do with his being a citizen of Kashmir, perhaps out of emphasis on the fact that Azad Kashmir has its own system.
Keenly awaiting relevant info on Naik Asif and his story, let's see what unfolds.
Re: Nishan-e-Haider
For quite a while Pak had denied that the Pak army was involved in Kargil. I am glad they have accepted the Kargil dead as their own, and given them credit for their service.
Re: Nishan-e-Haider
I am glad u woke up. By the way both of these soldiers got NH right after the kargil conflict.
Re: Nishan-e-Haider
Sure. But why the initial denial that these were NLI soldiers ?
Re: Nishan-e-Haider
Capt Sher Khan and Hav Lalak Jan NH were declared NH recipients by July-August 1999. NH is given to Pakistan's very own regulars. Capt Sher Khan's body was also accompanied by a letter of commendation and reccomendation for a galantry award from the Indian battalion commander facing his company.
Re: Nishan-e-Haider
Thanks. Thats my point - why the initial denial and then suddden acceptance after India provided proof ?
Re: Nishan-e-Haider
Not really, Sawar Muhammad Hussein Shaheed’s body was wrapped in an Indian flag as a recognition of his valor and a letter of commendation recommending gallantry award was also written for him by the Indian CO in 1971. Similarly in Siachen, the Pakistan Army CO wrote a letter of commendation for a KIA Indian Lt. (or 2/Lt. I can’t recall which).
Re: Nishan-e-Haider
And I always thought it's named after Hazrat Ali...
Re: Nishan-e-Haider
It is named after Hazrat Ali; the information regarding the connection with Hyder Ali f/o Tipu Sultan of Mysore is wrong. It's another misconception.
The 'naara-e-Haideri' is also about Hazrat Ali.
It's plain logic, Haider Ali's name was itself based on that of Hazrat Ali.
Another NH recipient who recvd commendation from the Indian Bn Cdr was Maj Shabbir Shariff in 1971.
