While others are busy improving their software, the Japanese video game giant has made a change in an area long overlooked – the controller that allows users to play the games.

It looks like a TV remote, and players can handle it like a sword, swing it like a baseball bat or wave it like a conductor’s baton depending on the game.

“It’s designed like a TV remote because that’s familiar to everyone including those who are intimidated by a two-handed controller,” explains company President Satoru Iwata. “Its intuitive form allows both experienced and new gamers to stand on the same starting line.”

Nintendo was a former market leader in the industry, but has since been eclipsed by Sony’s PlayStation and the Xbox.

Game watchers believe this new idea could help spur more interest in Nintendo’s product. “It’s not a gimmick, and it’s different,” assesses analyst Hiroshi Kamide. “It should get people interested.”

And it’s clear that’s exactly what the company is hoping for. “Our mission is to revive the gaming industry by increasing our user base,” Iwata confirms. “If we can’t do that, we might as well stand back and watch the market die off.”

I personally think the controllers look pretty pathetic and I doubt that it would pose any threats to the upcoming Playstation and Xbox sales.

Anyone familiar with the type of games it would be offering? Or what their target market is like?

That is pathetic because?

You do know it has two snesort to pick up on movement of controler. That for developers makes it so much better than others.

Never said the technology is bad. However, the design is what I don't like. Technology itself rocks. I believe Sega and/or other companies did come out with something similar. Not sure how well they did.

Who wants to play Halo 2 with a TV remote? Or car racing? Or FIFA? Or whatever.

^ you could play fly-fishing. betcha you won’t be able to do it with the conventional ones. now imagine how this will mimic the movement of your wrists…

halo who goves a fook. PC is where FPS belongs. Car racing well imagine tilting or moving the controller in a tilt or action mimicking a steering wheel to turn or you could use a analogue stick it has like a normal controler. Fifa well you have a lot more control. You could mimick the action of stricking a ball e.g. upwards motion for a flick, volley and alter energy transfered with your action. So much better than pressing a button. Think a little different doesnt have to follow the same concepts of a controler since they came out.

the day they have my favourite arcade game silent scope for home pc/tv with raplica of urban sniper rifle, i will be happy..
