Hm in my family its kinda mixed..my sister had her nikaah 2 yrs before the wedding. but my elder sister had it on the baraat day..now for my brothers wedding the nikaah will be a seperate occasion as they want their mehndi together and the elders feel that its better if they have the nikaah done first so they can have the mehndi together w/out any issues..id always thought the nikaah should be on the actual day but even if it is before i guess thats good too as you get to enjoy that as a seperate small function with ur immediate family.
