britchick, rukhsati's are cultural "giving away of the bride" ceremonies, not religious. once the nikah's is over, thats it, you're married and can live together and all of that. i suppose it makes sense to separate them if the bride and groom are in different countries and its not possible to have them physically present, together, on the same day. i know people who've had phone nikkah's because the groom wasn't able to join his wife in the same country for whatever reason and then he's flown over for the rukhsati, but i found that whole concept silly. immigration will happen whether its now, 6 months later, or a year later... more and more, the "jald baazi" of a nikah ticks me off. its like stoppit said, people say "its just a nikah", lets do it before dinner some night and get it out of the way so papers can be filed.

the religious ceremony is usually only witnessed by near and dear ones while the wedding reception has the rest of the wedding list!
the rukhsati is just the wedding reception-- the fancy party, etc.
i have some friends who had super fancy nikkahs, but very quiet receptions/rukhsatis, and others who did the exact opposite.
but yes, the nikkah is significant and should not be dismissed to the sidelines.now, whether the celebration is the loudest of all the wedding events or the quietest, varies from person to person, family to family.

well, in my case ..... my engagement was last year, this year nikah and next year rukhsati - what a ****. there are a lot of matters ... i think beetween nikah and rukhsati, there should not be a gap. but both of my celebration were very simple (famaly intern)

i got nikaofied last year and am getting married next year....i've been nikaofied for like a year and ahalf and its FREAKIN AWESOME. You can pretty much do whatever you want and thats like freakin amazing considering the fact that i live in america and going out is like drinking water. when i mean say " you can do whatever you want" i mean YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT. HAHAHA. me and him have gotten so freakin close its amazing. The best thing about the whole deal is that you can learn each others habbits and personalities before actually living together which is great because then there aren't that many fights! I LOVE HIIMMMMMMMMM MEWII BUCHIIIIII NIKIIII SEEE. ok wow. he would shoot me if he saw that. bye.

For me several reasons:
First of all want to secure the relation
To get into a hallal relation so both of us will have an opportunity to be together
Right after Nikkah will change her documents on my name so right after rukhsati i'll be able to get her visa much easily
I am going to Pak in March just for Nikkah purpose.. Rukhsati will be in October Inshallah so untill October i would have a chance to get all her documents ready to get a family visa :)

I guess they do it beacuse people want to go home with their spouse after the wedding and not sit at home or worse at the in laws with no hubby. I have seen people wait for 2-5 years even for the immigration to take place.
