It’s called sleep paralysis, a condition where you are usually confronted with a nightmare (and you might even be aware that you’re dreaming) but you’re incapable of movement/speech.

I went through that for few years. I used to see a small(ish) child like person (shadow) either approaching me or sitting on my chest.
