I heard that islamically we should not call each other nicknames and we should call their original name.
Anyone heard of this as well?

Quran 49:11
O ye who believe! Let not a folk deride a folk who may be better than they (are), not let women (deride) women who may be better than they are; neither defame one another, **nor insult one another by nicknames.* Bad is the name of lewdness after faith. And whoso turneth not in repentance, such are evil-doers. *
the point is to not use nicknames as insults....
but if someone uses nicknames to call by love, it is very well and good....
the Prophet (saw) used to called his wife Ayesha (ra) by a nickname (aysh)....

Islam did not use defaced form of nicknames generating from the same name as nickname for example fazlu from fazal, wicky from waqar, saify from saif, shabo from Shabana etc but some other meaningful terms as nick names for example Abu Turab, Humayra etc
from authentic hadith it is known that the Prophet (saw) used to call his wife Hazrat Ayesha (ra) as "ayesh"....
as long as the nickname is not meant to be offensive and insulting i dont think Islam has any problem with it....
This is Yusuf Ali's translation. Same verse what amughal posted.
It says 'Offensive' nicknames...
49:11. Al-Hujarat- The Private Apartments, The Inner Apartments
*'O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong.' *

^^ I am referring to this. I am not talking about calling people "insulting" nicknames.

i dont recall the hadith reference exactly, but the hadith is very popular so i am sure u can dig it up urself....
the text goes (in arabic) "ya ayesh hatha jibraeel yaqrauki alsalam"....
and there is another hadith narrated by ayesha where she says that the first surah i memorized was surah taha and when i recited "taha ma anzalna alayka alqurana letashqa", the prophet (saw) jokingly replied "la shaqayta ya ayesh"....
there r other ahadith too....
am sure u can find them if u r really interested in knowing....
i am satisfied so i dont wish to bother myself with the pain of looking for u....
Our Sheikh told us nicknames are allowed to be used in ceratin cases for example, a nickname for the person which is famous for than his real name. And he give us an example of a Hadeeth Scholar and his nickname wasn't something very nice, and the Sheikh never liked to be called by this name, but we still use that name, becuase it was what he was famously known by. We don't use it as an insult. I will have to ask him about the name of the Scholar, what his nickname was and what his real name was.
But as for nicknames, like the Prophet had for his wives then this is allowed. Like nicknames, which show your love for someone etc.

Interesting. Do not we see today that every other person who claims to be a muslim is indulged in making fun of others someway or other? Amazing. That makes so many of us Hypocrites. Scary. And Hypocrites will be in the lowest pitt of hellfire.
May Allah save all of us from the hell fire for the only successful are those who are the winner in the life hereafter. Read Surah At Taghabun.

Well it doesn't make you automatically a Hypocrite. It just means it is one of the characteristics of the Hypocrites that you posess. We should all be careful, you are right.
