An Indian man was convicted on Thursday for smuggling a Pakistani man
hidden
in a suitcase into Hong Kong and was sentenced to 16 months in prison,
authorities said.
Immigration officials said they became suspicious when they saw Pardeep
Singh, 22, with a suitcase large enough to hold a man.
Singh tried to enter Hong Kong on December 26 from the mainland Chinese
border city of Shenzhen, officials said in a statement.
The Pakistani - identified by local media as 24-year-old Raja Kamran -
was
previously deported from Hong Kong on August 14 and banned from ever
returning, officials said. He then flew to Shenzhen and asked Singh to
help
him get back into this former British colony.
Singh denied that the luggage was his and told the Kwu Tong Magistracy
court
that an Indian friend had given it to him.
Kamran was sentenced to 18 months in prison last month for illegally
entering Hong Kong and violating a deportation order.
