NHL Playoffs

Oh I’m in Manitoba.. its about 6-7 hours drive. It sure does take long when you have to drive through Saskatchewan, which is sooooo boring.

My friend lives in Calgary, and since its summer break, and my spring class will be complete by next week, I have decided to go check out the atmosphere.

You guys should come too! This is a once in a life time thing to happen to a Canadian team. :k:

Driving through Saskatchewan, eh? ah that can get extremely boring....flat prairie fields stretched out for miles and miles.

Masha'Allah did you watch today's match? The first period was pretty bad, but they changed that around... it's really wonderful to see how much support there is from the rest of Canada.

i think you are going to find many interesting things to keep you occupied there, Insha'Allah. The 'atmosphere' is totally ridden with Flames fever. Every third, fourth car has a Flames flag... some people wear red wigs... some wear ONLY red clothing. It's crazy...

It's going to be even more crazier there whatwith the win tonight. They have done the city, and all of Canada, really proud. Even if they don't make it all the way, they're already winners in many peoples' eyes.

sorry folks, been a lil bz…didn’t watch all of game 2, but i did catch the last period action when tampa got the convincing lead…looked like tampa was doin everythin right that nite…tampa realized in game 2 that calgary is a much more physically challenging team (when it comes to checks etc) and played accordingly…eventhough calgary didn’t allow 2 many chances, tampa capitalized on the chances that were given…scores were reversed in that game compared to game 1, and tampa won 4 - 1 which left the series tied at 1 - 1 :k:

game 3 last nite was sensational…both teams were doin their best…neither team allowed 2 many chances…at the end, what mattered was that tampas offense couldn’t break through calgary’s defense while calgary’s offense made ways to break tampas defense and score…

that save by kipursoff at the beginnin of the 2nd period when tampa had a breakaway opp was probably the turnin point of the game…with 2 players stormin the goal and no one on defense, just the goalie, its a tough save, and he still managed to do it…a few mins later simon scored the 1st goal…simon has been a key player for calgary, esp in powerplays…he has scored on 5 of 6 power play chances that he has faced in the play-offs so far…calgary went on to win on that game 3 - 0, which also gave kipursoff the leading 5th shut-out of the play-offs :k:

that leaves the series 2 - 1 in calgary’s favour…next game is also a home game to calgary…and eventhough the home record hasn’t been all that great for calgary in the play-offs, i think their strategy of stayin in a hotel overnite even if its a home game might just be workin, as they have won the last 2 home games…we’ll c in the next one if calgary can maintain the momentum…

it can still go either way cuz both the teams have had fantastic reactions after losing a game, and have come back really strong…so tampas gonna try their best once again to tie the series 2 - 2…and they definitly have the capability of doin that as well…lets see what happens

comeon…where are all the hockey enthusiests…i feel like i’m talkin to myself here :stuck_out_tongue:

watched parts of last nites game…and boy, calgary was comin down hard on tampa…khabulin was the star of the game, not allowin any goals and shuttin out calgary…the only goal by tampa came early on in the 1st period on a 2 man advantage over calgary…that proved to be enough to win the game…

hats off to tampa to survive the calgary attack :k: and of course, for winnin the game…

series is now tied 2 - 2…so far, as expected, it looks like it’ll go down to the wire, i.e. game 7…both of these teams win one after losing one…so next one should be calgarys’ InshaAllah :bhangra:

Great posts, DM :k: :k: :k: Sorry yaar. You are doing it all in this thread. Your analysis is always very interesting & useful to read Masha’Allah. i appreciate the time you put into writing all that up.

Today’s headline & first paragraph from the Calgary Herald: “A lot of people don’t want us to be here” - Frustrated Flames coach Darryl Sutter played the underdog to the hilt Wednesday after losing a player to a one-game suspension, suggesting the National Hockey League is conspiring to stop them from winning the Stanley Cup.

:~/ hmmmmm. i don’t think he should have stated that :konfused: Just makes the Flames look like they are being whiny and fussy, and sore losers.

Oh well - i hope they win tonight’s match Insha’Allah.

Masha'Allah Calgary leading, barely four minutes into the game. Gelinas scored the first one.

Looks like an intense match already. Ninnemen (that's not the right spelling, i know, sorry) has to sit out this game. Flames coach extremely angry about that decision.

Flames are really piling on the pressure in the first period, Masha'Allah. i hope they can keep that pressure sustained and keep the defence up.

So what happened....?

I heard that the game went into overtime at 2-2

Flames won

watched the game 3rd period onwards...calgary was leading 2 - 1 till the beginnin of the 3rd period, and had apparently dominated the game that far as well...but early on in the 3rd, tampa managed to tie the game on a power play to make the score an even 2 - 2...the third period surely was exciting with both teams lookin pretty evenly matched up, gettin a few chances...game went into OT...

OT is alwayz exciting as well, obviously cuz its sudden-death for the team that gets scored on...and again, just like the 3rd period, both teams got a fair number of chances and looked evenly matched up...Oleg Saprykin scored with just under 6 mins of play left to the end of the 1st OT period...

end result, just as expected, calgary won the game and got the crucial 3 - 2 lead in the series...stats favour calgary heavily at this point...the team which has won game 5 in the playoff finals has gone on to win the cup 80% of the time...

next game will be on sat nite, and it will be in calgary...calgary will try to make use of the home ice advantage (eventhough their record wasn't all that great for home games, they won 4 home games in a row and lost one so now its an even 5 - 5 home avg for calgary) and get things goin, burn out the lightning once and for all and take the cup...however, lighting will come down hard in order to try and even the series out once again, and force a game 7...and the way both these teams have been playin so far in the series, they win one and lose one, so its quite possible that tampa will win the next one and force game 7...but they are up AGAINST calgary, IN calgary, so u never know...might be the end on sat :) lets see what happens...

heh...coach should be angry at Nieminen cuz that hit on St. Louis was uncalled for and deserved a major penalty, which he got in game 4 (5 min major penalty against calgary) plus a game...otherwise he's been good for the flames so far...hopefully when he's back for sats game he'll be just as good, minus the uncalled penalties :p

danke nido

heh…u know, i think the flames coach was using that statement more as a strategy to get the team charged up…thats the first thought that occured to me today when i read this post of urs…and then later on during the game, b4 the start of the OT period, they showed that gretzky said the same thing bout team canada in the 2002 olympics to get them all charged up, and that actually led them to win the gold that yr…

so even if that statement appears whiny, its still brilliant if it can get calgary charged up for not just winning one game, but the cup as well  and obviously the results are here now, flames taking the critical 3 - 2 lead in the series…lets see if they can wrap it up in calgary on sat nite  u can bet the streets will be pretty much empty till the end of the game, and if calgary wins, the streets will be jam packed

dude what happened to the all the die-hard canay-eh-eh-dian fans?
Tampa Bay forces Game 7.

^^ its not only the “canadian” fans, its all the NHL fans…as soon as their fav teams were out, so were they out of this thread :stuck_out_tongue: i feel like i’m talkin to myself :stuck_out_tongue:

newayz

what a fantastic game last nite…tampa dominated the first half (i.e. the first period and part of the second period) and calgary came back strong after that…all the goals were scored in the 2nd period, tampa drawing first blood…richards had both the goals (unassisted as well) for tampa :k:

game went into OT, and each of the 2 teams good enuf chances to end it but they couldn’t capitalize on it…game finally ended 33 secs into the 2nd OT period when St. Louis scored right from a face-off pass in the calgary zone…

nail biting finish…and eventhough calgary dominated the later periods, it was tampa which managed to create a good play and score :k:

there was some controversy as well if calgary had gotten 3 goals, the 3rd goal comin off the skate of gelinas from a pass by neimenen…the stills that i saw, the puck was cleary over the line, but u can’t tell if it was on the ice, and obviously the benifit of the doubt went to tampa, it was not recognized as a “goal”…

they kept on showing 17th ave./st. in calgary, man it was already packed with ppl wantin to party if calgary had won…

game 7 will now be in tampa on mon i believe…neither team has won 2 in a row and each team has come back real strong after a defeat, so that game should be calgarys…but u never know, tampa has the home ice advantage and that can be a big enough factor for the teams spirit to win even in losing situations, just like it was for calgary last nite…eventhough tampa was in the lead twice, they managed to tie the game both times and force OT…

may the better team win :k: but nonetheless, GO FLAMES GO!! :bhangra:

I hope Calgary wins game 7. I wanta see all j00 Can-eh-dians in a trance :>

God, i had typed up this massive nice long post, full of hype and cheer for mah boyz, and as SOON as i was about to log in to post it, a cry went up from our living room - Tampa had scored the third goal in the second OT. i think i jinxed them. :( :( i watched the whole match - actually, everyone in my family watched the whole match, even including my sister's mother-in-law who, incidentally, predicted from the beginning that Tampa would win :D

By the way, as the game was being played right up until the second overtime, all you could hear was the sound of cars honking and people screaming. There were people holding replicas of the Stanley Cup, standing at random intersections, with banners proclaiming "HONK IF YOU SUPPORT THE FLAMES". Of course i honked :o

DM is right - Tampa dominated in the beginning. The Flames just were not all there in spirit. It was nothing like their previous matches if you have watched them playing in Florida. They went in facing a huge amount of pressure (i am not making excuses for them not playing well, Tampa DID play better at some parts and that is indisputable) - the Flames should have focused on trying to play this 'just as another regular game', not as THE game that could usher in the Cup into the building and into Canada. But of course, it's hard if not impossible to block all that mental pressure away. And there was SO MUCH pressure on them. The entire city of Calgary is rooting for them, what to say of the rest of the country. That support actually works to their detriment, to be honest, i think.

i think they will play better in Florida, Insha'Allah. For one thing, the pressure has now shifted onto Tampa - it's now them who will be facing a home crowd. Flames tend to do better, statistically speaking, on the road.

That replay goal DM is referring to - yaar on CBC they showed frame-by-frame replays of that and to ME it definitely looked as though the puck did cross the ice. But khair.... i guess the referees will try their best, and we are all human, we make errors. i'm sure they judged it as objectively as they were able to.

Tomorrow's game is going to be so interesting. May the most deserving team win, Insha'Allah.

Tampa is NOT going to mess around in Game 7. Trust me, I knew what they done to FLYERS in Game 7. :(

tampa bahbayyyy!!! calgary is done! done! done!

Rats, TB scored a powerplay goal 8:40 PM EST.

i was in class, caught the last 7 mins of the 1st period when tampa was on a power-play...and just seeing calgarys movement, i knew tampa was gonna score, and surely they did...the last 7 mins of the 1st belonged to tampa, dunno bout earlier...they came close to score a couple more as well within that time frame, calgary players were just blah...if they continue playin like that, tampas surely going to win this game and the cup...2 more periods to go, calgary on a powerplay with 1 min and 40 somethin seconds to spare at the beginnin of the 2nd period, lets see if they can regroup and utilize the power play to its fullest and atleast tie the game...
